ATL/DAL/DEN - Trade Idea

To ATL:
PG - Juan Jose Barea
SF - Shawn Marion

To DAL:
SF - Carmelo Anthony (resigned as part of the trade)

To DEN:
SF - Marvin Williams
SF - Caron Butler
PF - Josh Powell
2011 and 2013 1st rounder from DAL (both unprotected)
2011 1st rounder from ATL (top 5 protected)

Why for Atlanta?
The Hawks finally get to plug the hole at PG with the 26 year old Barea. He's no CP3 or Nash, but he can ball and is better than anything we have. Together with Bibby, the backcourt would be more balanced heading into the postseason and into the following seasons post-Bibby. This would also relieve the pressure for Teague to develop quickly (if he ever does at all). Of course, if Barea bolts then we at least a) made a solid trade to try and swing for the fences this season and b) switched Marvin for Marion. Marion may be older, but he is a more complete player than Marvin is on both ends of the floor.

New Atlanta lineup:
Barea/Bibby/Teague
Joe/JC1/JC2
Marion/Smoove/Evans/Wilkins
Smoove/Horford/Thomas
Horford/Zaza/Collins

Why for Dallas?
The Mavs would probably hesitate to trade Barea with the way he's turned on recently, but a) they're extremely deep at guard now that Rodrigue is back from injury and b) they're getting the big prize in (an extended) Melo. Enough said.

New Dallas lineup:
Kidd/Beaubois/Terry
Stevenson/Terry
Melo/Peja/Stevenson
Dirka Dirka/Chandler/Cardinal
Chandler/Haywood/Mahinmi

Why for Denver?
The Nuggz may have to trade Melo when push comes to shove. This trade gives them 3 1st rounders and expiring contracts. Probably not a deal Denver would fall in love with, but if they do feel that their hands might be tied with regards to Melo, then this may be a decent package in return all things considered. A chance to start over. Who knows, maybe even Marvin finally finds his place under coach Karl.

New Denver lineup:
Billups/Lawson/Carter
Aflalo/J.R./Butler*
Marvin/Harrington/Butler*/Forbes
KMart/Harrington/Shellhead
Nene/Birdman

There is no need for Dallas in this trade. The Hawks can offer Marvin, Josh Powell and Jamal Crawford and get Carmelo! Why would the hawks want an undersized PG and Shawn Marion's contract?

Melo >> Marion + Barea

 If this was true this deal would have been done ages ago.

What's an undersized PG? Like Chris Paul undersized? I remember some around here knocking CP3 for his size before the now infamous Marvin pick.

You missed the part about 3 #1 picks, which supposedly aren't enough to meet Denver demands anyway.

Horrible trade for the Hawks as we trade Marvin's contract for Marion's contract which is actually worse given his age.

JJ Barea is an undersized point guard. He is probably 5'9"... I'm not about to trade Jamal and Marvin for JJ Barea and an over paid old Shawn Marion. It makes no sense. That is a terrible trade for the Hawks. And don't compare Chris Paul to JJ Barea... not even the same level. Not even close.

Yes and no. Marion's contract is more $ than Marvin's, but his production is better just about across the board despite his age. The length of the contract is the same. He can defend better. If we're looking at it from a strictly financial standpoint, then perhaps it makes less sense. If we're looking at it from the perspective that we need to make some noise sooner than later before this core gets any older and/or is separated (trade, FA, retirement (Bibby) etc.) then it makes more sense. I feel the time is now to make a run. There are probably better trades out there, but this one would easily improve our squad for the playoffs IMHO.

Where do I start. You don't like the trade. I can understand that. Try not to fly off the handle, though. We root for the same team .

I'll give this a shot:

a) Barea is 6'0". Not 5'9". In fact, he has the same exact measurements as Chris Paul.

b) I like how you assumed I was saying that Barea and Paul are equal talents. Obviously, I was pointing out your flawed logic that a PG's worth is measured by his size.

c) When did I ever mention Jamal Crawford in my trade proposal?

d) Like I mentioned earlier, Marion is twice the player Marvin is. I'd rather overpay someone that's productive than pay for Marvin at any price. Plus, the contract lengths are equal.

^^^^ My point on Marion is that his deal while on about $1M more is that he's in his 30s and likely to experience an even greater production drop off than he already has. Your counter that he is more than Marvin ever will be is a solid argument though.
