i heard about this from 680. Kinkade seems to think it is really serious.

Why was Belkin such a bad alternative? I'll admit that it wasn't worth 5 years of hassle....but his initial argument about unnecessarily offering the picks to Phoenix was probably right.

Rumors of this have been out there for a couple years now, but nothing was reported by the AJC, so we'll see what comes of it. I'd be nice to not have an ownership that's built around a circle of owners that are all heavily involved.

Not only that, but out of all the owners Belkin always seemed to be the most fan friendly as well. He disapproved giving up the draft picks, which I understand, and he never seemed to care for Billy Knight.

(1) wanting to take the team to Las Vegas and
(2) wanting to operate the team on the cheap until he could make that move.

If the league would allow a team to move to Las Vegas it would have already happened. I think the ASG was just throwing Belkin under the bus and they used the media to their advantage.

I still think the picks was the main issue for Belkin. He seemed to think the Suns had no intentions on matching, but we still included the picks, and Boris Diaw. Phoenix also ended up with a $6 million dollar trade exception. At the time I never felt good about the two first round picks being involved. We needed a franchise type of player and we received that, but it caused a great deal of issues within our organization.

Saying publically that you plan to match an offer doesn't really mean much. Why would they have said otherwise if they actually wanted to get something of value back in the sign and trade?

And as for the "2 mid level picks" part of the trade....the pick the Hawks used on Horford was actually supposed to go to Phoenix. The Hawks somehow jumped over Boston,Memphis,and Milwaukee to get that 3rd pick. They fell ass backwards into Al Horford thanks to having a bad team despite BK spending our 13 million in caproom on Speedy,Lo Wright,in Anthony Johnson to make a playoff push.

I had no idea man...didn't even come close to trying to insult anybody in particular. That's not what i was going for. Knowledge and communication is key, thanks for the heads up.

But why wouldn't they say that? What owner is going to admit to being cheap to the media when they don't have to?

^^ Much has been made about Sarver and being cheap... but PHX is consistently the team that comes from nowhere to pick up a player on a bigger contract that has been deemed to be "unmoveable" (i.e., Shaq @ $20M, Hedo). If they figure the player will be worth the contract, then they seem willing to pull the trigger on a deal; if they don't think the player will be worth the contract, then they would prefer to dump him.

As for JJ, it was widely rumored that PHX wouldn't match and it's good gamesmanship to say you would have matched after the fact (you never want to say that you completely fleeced the other team or else no one would want to do business with you in the future), but even so, I think they would have matched. JJ was coming off a season that was simply incredible (48% from 3) and really established himself as a legit 3rd piece to Nash and Amare in D'Antoni's system. JJ would have pushed out Marion and his contract could have been dumped fairly easily to free up the $$ to pay JJ. I can't say they would have matched, but I do think so...

JJ was not the 3rd piece...Marion was.

I don't think we'll ever know exactly if they would have matcherd....but I thought it was interesting that while Joe asked Phoenix not to match...he also stated that he would have no problems coming back if they did. If Phoenix really valued him that much then I believe they would have brought him back regardless of his request.

Lots of people say we don't know if they would have match, and that's right, but said we kept the signing offer, and no sign-&-trade, if they would have match, how is it possible we act like it was loosing the opportunity to get Kobe, LeBron,... while it was only Joe, a guy who was the fourth option in PHX ?

Maybe the problem is here, and added the full ISO we used until he needed an extension, we build themselves the price of this 126M contract.

OK, it was time to get a good player, did he make the impact we were hoping ? Not really, we needed Bibby and Horford to be over the .500 level.

If PHX would have match, we would have been the first team to cry like if we lost Kobe, while it was at best a very good second option guy, and not one to build a team on.

Just look at OKC, did they added a Max player before being at .500 with only their pick players ? No
POR tried also this way, lots of good pick, then add veteran.

We were set for some lottery for two more years, so why adding a Max guy at this moment ?
A guy who would have all the key, and not help our young guys growing by playing all ISO.

I go extreme on this (I would certainly have to try to sign Joe, but not in sign-&-trade) but it's only to show that Belkin not wanting to add picks and players could have been a good decision.

In the end, Joe costs us 70M + Diaw + pick of Rondo + pick of Robin Lopez, then 126M.
(and since they picked Marvin because they thought Joe would be a PG, we could also say that he cost us Marvin or Paul or Williams by bad evaluation of a player).

That's a high price for Joe.
