Did the Hawks miss out on Deron for a second time?

I was pushing for a Joe/Deron trade for weeks before the trade deadline.

but i was reading some articles on the recent trades, and a few of them were saying that the Hawks and Knicks missed out on Deron...... which i find absolutely dumb.

i don't know if Sund was aware of Deron's availability, but even if he was, hypothetically, the best offer that he could make, would be Horford and picks or Joe and picks (which would end up being low 1st rounders)

but essentially, NJ offered 3 top 5 picks (Favors, NJN's pick, and GSW's pick).

they make it sound like Joe would have been a better offer than NJN's picks, and i don't see how the Jazz would want to take any of the Hawk players when they have a shot at getting Irving or Rivers.

I don't think there was anyway we could have put together a better package without gutting our team.

Horford+picks probably wouldn't be enough since the picks would be crappy...and then you run the risk of Deron bolting of course.

Sorry, I think Horford trumps every one of those other offers. An allstar big who's young, a winner and has a terrific midrange jumper? However, I'm sure Sund would have passed on trading Horford. Hinrich/Horford beat the pants off of DWilliams/Jason Collins.

The Hawks and Knicks didn't miss out on Deron. It takes two to tango. Utah didn't shop Deron. New Jersey brought up the trade idea and made an offer the Jazz found acceptable. I'm sure Utah got other calls along the way with rumors of Deron Williams being unhappy being out there. It took an offer that blew them away. The Hawks could have offered more talent now, but not in the same positions and Utah doesn't have to evaluate it the same way.

Honestly, no one could/should have matched what NJN put forth for Deron. A #3 overall pick + 2 probably top 10 picks in the next 2 drafts and a decent stop gap PG in Harris is an incredible return for any player. This is the type of deal that could propel UTH into championship status is 2-3 years with good scouting and player development. There is no way we, or NYK, could have matched that.
