Former Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson told FOX 26 Sports he is interested in becoming the next head coach of the Houston Rockets.

During his 6-year stint with the Hawks, they became the seventh team in NBA history to win more games than the previous year for five straight seasons including three straight playoff appearances.

Woodson played for the Rockets from 1988-1991 and still owns a home in Katy.

"I have big-time interest in it, I mean absolutely," Woodson said. "It's a young team that I think has room for growth.

"I think it's a team that you add a piece or two here or there and you got a chance to compete in the West. The fact that I've had an opportunity to build a young team in Atlanta, I think I fit right in in terms of being able to come right in and coach that team up."

When Woodson took over the Hawks in 2004 his first team won 13 games. Five years later Atlanta won 53 games, the club's best season in 13 years.

"When you're dealing with young people you've got to be able to relate to them," Woodson said. "When you got 12 different guys on the team that view things sort of differently and as a head coach it's my job to try to get everybody on the same page and in doing that I've got to teach.

"I can only relate to my past experience here in Atlanta. When I took over that team it was a gutted team.

"This team is not a gutted team. This team has pretty good personnel right off the bat. I had a young team of 18, 19, 20 year-old young men that I had to teach. We had to do a lot of teaching from a fundamental standpoint in terms of how to play hard and to play at this level." http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/ ... next-coach

Coach Woodson is making a strong case by praising Houston as a city and it's fans. I doubt Woody is the type of coach Daryl Morey is seeking.

Just wanted to point this lil' gem out.

Woody might make a name for himself for building up young teams into good ones.

I still think little of Woodson, but he's from the Larry Brown coaching tree and I don't like Larry Brown either.

Thanks Coach Woodson:

You made us the players we are today...

Signed,

Marvin Williams
Shelden Williams
Acie Law
Jeff Teague
Solomon Jones

With you coach, it was definitely all about building through the draft.

I wonder where all the Woodson apologists are who used to tell me that it wasn't his job to develop players. Now HE advertises himself as a teacher.

Say what you want about the man. His teams got better and better every year, and he was handed a bucket of scraps. There are tons of other head coaches that didn't have success during their first trial as a head coach, but were able to learn from their mistakes and go on to be solid coaches.

Some of the players on this list have played with other coaches since Woody, and they still haven't developed into anything.

If you don't get developed the first few years in the league, then you don't get the right foundation.
You could be right that they haven't developed anywhere else, but who thought so highly of them that they drafted them? This wasn't a Billy Knight only brigade.

I would like to hear Woody now say that the braintrust of the Hawks didn't see Chris Paul, Deron Williams or even Rondo looked like they could compete at this level.

Its not just who they brought in and didn't develop; its the ones who you passed over as well.

I will say Woody's record improved every year, but we both know there is a peak with him no matter what the talent. And shaving your head/eyebrows and wearing your Detroit assistant coach ring during the playoffs doesnt' motivate millionaires in the playoffs.

Everyone makes mistakes, you live and you learn. No it wasn't a Billy Knight only brigade, but he was the GM and he played a big roll in who was drafted. Billy Knight basically came out and told the world he was going to draft Shelden Williams before the freakin draft even started, what GM makes a dumb move like that?

Rockets Contact Mike Woodson

NBA sources told FOX 26 Sports the Houston Rockets contacted former Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Woodson to let him know of their interest in interviewing him as the Rockets search for a new head coach.

During his 6-year stint as the Hawks head coach Atlanta became just the seventh team in NBA history to win more games than the previous year for five straight seasons, including three straight playoff appearances.

Woodson, who played for the Rockets from 1988-1991 and still owns a home in Katy, was not available for comment on Wednesday.

However, on Tuesday Woodson told FOX 26 Sports he hoped he would have the opportunity to meet with Rockets officials about their job.

"I have big-time interest in it, I mean absolutely," Woodson said on Tuesday.

In Woodson's first three years with the Hawks his record was 69-177. His final three years in Atlanta Woodson was 137-109.

"It'll mean a great a deal if they give me the opportunity to come in and talk about their personnel and the direction of where they are going with the basketball team," Woodson said. http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/ ... ke-woodson

Time to see if Daryl Morey proves me wrong.
