Things to do in Atlanta

Post#1 » by Ashwinz. » Sun Nov 13, 2011 1:56 pm

Hey all,

I moved to Atlanta recently, Georgia Tech, specifically, and follow these boards quite exclusively for all things my Basketball Addiction can handle.

I moved from Minneapolis, where I supported (and still do) the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Long time reader of these Atlanta Boards, since I am a fan, and always have been since the Spud Webb / and Damien Wilkins era.
I'm interested in what you guys are willing to share in terms of "gems" of Atlanta, be it a Location, Restaurant, Bar, anything within the Atlanta area. I have a car, but am stuck to my GPS for anything other than Atlantic Station (seconds from where I live) :P

Thanks in advance, and man... do I need this season to start, more than ever.

I'll be sure to attend any Hawks games I can in my spare time, and definitely when the Wolves come to town! I'll be the one with the Rubio jersey on! :)

Thanks!

Welcome to Atlanta. Some quickies.
1. Atlanta has the most well-developed bar trivia scene that I'm aware of. No less than 3 companies provide competitive trivia (pub quizzes) where you can compete as teams for bar cash to use on your next visit. teamtrivia.com is one of the companies but not the only one. You can probably find a show at places near you and not all are "bar" bars but rather restaurants if age is an issue. If you're smart you can subsidize your dining experiences. Tavern 99 is a place in Buckhead that does trivia on Tuesday nights that has great food and a good shot at winning money as the attendance has been down lately.

2. Food. Some food locations to take in if you like Chicago deep dish pizza look up Nancy's Pizza. If you are looking for southern there are plenty of examples but an old favorite is Mary Mac's Tea Room on Ponce. It's a meat and three place. For desert I advocate you check out Cafe Intermezzo. For Mexican, Nuevo Laredo has received good marks, but it's been awhile since I've been there. For a pretty good Steam Pot, I'd say check out Six Feet Under. Best burger to me is the Vortex, but opinions vary.

3. Sports. With the season likely dead and you already aware of GT events, I would just point out that we have a minor league hockey team up in Gwinnett (I-85 to Sugarloaf Pkwy). The Gwinnett Gladiators provide good bang for the buck entertainment. An arena football team plays in that same arena come spring.

4. Comedy. Several comedy venues to take in shows at including the Punchline (Sandy Springs), Funny Farm (Marietta), Laughing Skull Lounge (back of Vortex in midtown), and the Uptown Comedy Corner. There are also improve shows at Dad's Garage and Whole World Theater.

5. Group activity. Get some friends together and look into to WhirlyBall. I could explain it, but it really must be experienced.

Someone else can fill you in on touristy stuff and culture stuff as those things just are not my bag. Likewise I'm too old and uncool give timely advice about the best clubs or bars to check out.

Good luck and if you are looking for something specific just post the question and someone will try to answer (Hawks fans are a friendly lot).

Sorry about moving to Tech.

I don't know a ton about the city since I live out in Gwinnett. Another trivia company is Outspoken entertainment. I know they have trivia at restaurants and even a bowling alley or two. They stretch from the city, out to Gwinnett, over to Cobb, and even in Savannah.

I went to the Vortex at Little Five Points. It was solid, but I've had the best burger already so I am a bit bias. But for that you have to drive to Starkville, MS.

Come spring as well, Gwinnett has a AAA baseball team if you are looking for something that isn't Turner Field.

Of course there is the touristy thing. Aquarium, World of Coke, CNN Center, ect.

If you need a grease fix then the Varsity is near Tech.

^^^ I've only gone to Vortex near 10th in Midtown and I've had better burgers outside of Atlanta, but the scope of the discussion is here. If you know a better burger in Atlanta, let me know.
