Atlanta Hawks: Hawks waive Sy, Wanamaker, Rolle (Update: Benson also released)
The Hawks waived forward Magnum Rolle and guards Pape Sy and Brad Wanamaker today. More cuts are coming later today: The roster now stands at 16, one more than the maximum, and it’s possible Atlanta will carry the minimum 13 players for the regular season.
UPDATE: The Hawks waived center Keith Benson, their only draft pick in June. The team plans to carry 15 on the roster to start the season. There are four players on the roster with non-guaranteed deals: Ivan Johnson, Jannero Pargo, Donald Sloan, and Jerry Stackhouse. http://blogs.ajc.com/hawks/2011/12/23/a ... ker-rolle/

Re: Atlanta Hawks: Hawks waive Sy, Wanamaker, Rolle, Benson
i was hoping that Charles Jenkins or Goudelock would have dropped to the Hawks, but they didn't. so i probably would have drafted E'Twaun Moore.
i thought Benson was too light, i wouldn't have drafted him, but dang, i think the Hawks should have given him atleast one year, i could have been wrong about the guy. in the two preseason games, i did love how he was committed to defense.
but it is great that the Hawks will keep Ivan Johnson.

Truky I cannot understand why things happ anden here.
So we were going to play "BIG" this year? Bulls**t. Is that why we are keeping, at the moment, eight players who can play the 1 an the 2?
Are we looking into the future when we keep Stackhouse, McGrady, Green, Pargo, Collins, Zaza, Radmanovic, but get rid of Sy and Benson, among others.
For the first time in some years, we stole in the Draft. Benson seemed to be an interesting prospect. But we released him.see it
Also we released Sy, because he cannot play the 1, but we keep Green, who is no PG either, and came here four days ago. Also we keep Pargo. Pleeeeeease....
While, inside we have Horford, Collins, Zaza and Smith, with a little help of Williams and Johnson and, may be, Radmanovic.
Is this a joke? Are we going to play a season with Horford and Smith inside and just Collins and Zaza behind, while we keep eight guys who play outside?
LD and the staff have to be crazy. I thing keeping Benson and/or Rolle was an obvious option.
I know Teague is recovering from an injury and could not be playing on Tuesday. I know Hinrich is out. So keeping one or two more guards was compulsory for us. But I truly believe Sy was a better option than both Green, Pargo, not to mention Sloan.
Teague/Hinrich/Pargo
JJ/McGrady/Green/Sloan
Williams/Johnson/Stackhouse
Smith/Radmanovic
Horford/Zaza/Collins
Ufff, what a soft roster we have.

Sund and Drew (because he's the one saying Sy can't play PG) have to be right on this decision, because when you see Sy scoring at will in the French league almost exactly like Batum did.
Batum made more rebounds and assists though, but they were both in one of the two best teams this season, and looked both easy on scoring, Sy being not a main option as coming of the bench.
He's certainly not Batum, but strange to see him on the verge of getting a multi-year contract from POR, and the other being cut while on a 3-year minimum contract.

This is a joke like Years80Hawks said; 2 preseason games is not enough for someone to prove themselves, so Idk why we didn't give Benson a minimum contract. He and Sy were actually pretty good in the games and if LD didn't want them on the roster at least give them a D-League assignment. The Hawks are going nowhere as long as Sund is GM and LD is coach. Oh how I despise this teams management and ownership.

The moves indicate a very "future is now" attitude. Not looking to develop players but to squeeze out as much in the short term as possible (future be damned). It isn't surprising as the coach is in his last year and the GM can't have too much longer of deal. Don't expect the lack of player development to change until ownership changes. Truthfully the veteran bench may help on-court basketball IQ which couldn't hurt, but I hope they don't break down physically in the course of this fast season.
I agree that the young players really got the short end in the abbreviated camp, but life isn't fair. They need to sign on in the D league and hone their craft and wait for injuries and other call up opportunities. Ivan Johnson and Donald Sloan were less raw and it got them spots. Willie Green's history of scoring (however inefficiently) gave him the upper hand on Pape Sy, who's just unproven at this level. Benson and Rolle likely wouldn't have gotten playing time under Drew anyway so it is hard to lament their loss too much. Again Drew doesn't have the luxury to develop Benson because if he misses the playoffs he'll be gone. We'll just be starting over on the bench again next year.

These moves are very Babcockesque with the jettisoning of picks and drafted players. Sund has gotten rid of Pape, Benson, Damion James for Jordan just to trade him too and another pick just to sell, Childress, David Andersen, said Cenk Akyol will never come over and lord knows what he's done with Sergiy Gladyr. Teague is the only player he's drafted that's still on the roster and I'm sure he'd be gone too if not for the Chicago series.
