Josh Smith Trade Value

Hello Hawks Fans,

As I am sure most of you know, the topic of Josh Smith has come up many times on the trade board. It seems that his value is highly debated among everyone. In order for a Josh Smith trade to happen, obviously the Hawks would have to benefit from the trade.

My question to you is, what would you put as Josh Smith's trade value? Putting this on the Hawks board (hopefully) will get just Hawks fans to answer, so I can more realistically judge him. Note that I am not putting who I am a fan of (though you can easily figure it out) in this post because I am looking more for generalizations than actual trades.

I have heard from people that are closer to the NBA front offices than I am that you can get a lotto pick plus some for Josh Smith. With that in mind, he could definitely garner significant assets. He has one year left on contract and is a borderline all-star. The team taking Josh would know that they are getting a valuable player with little risk since he has virtually no injury history, a short contract, and a nice impact on a nice number of games. With that said, Josh Smith would need to bring back a starting level SF or Center in order for this to be a good trade.

Any team that wants to win with Josh Smith needs:
A) a star SF, scoring and shooting can overcome Smith being undersized on some nights
or
B) a Stretch PF (can move smith to SF and still keep him inside on offense and punish switches)

that being said how many teams have that on their team?

Jon Leuer. Kevin Love. Ryan Anderson. Dirk Nowitzki.
maybe Al Harrington and Gallinari could work paired with Smith doubtful though.

Then you look at the teams that like Smith as a final piece and they have nothing they want to give us that we like.

In the past we have wanted A) a star B) a strong center that carry the load for Horford. in exchange for Smith.

Realistically, not happening.

An example of a type of player that I think the Hawks could/should getfor Smoove is Marcin Gortat from PHX.

Their scoring/rebounding numbers are similar this season. Gortat fills a need as a legitimate Center.
Smoove is younger with a higher ceiling and could be seen as a building block on a rebuilding team, while Gortat is more of a role player at a position that is difficult to fill in general.

I actually imagine Josh Smith + a 2nd round pick for Marcin Gortat and a (lottery protected) 1st round pick. Again, their numbers are similar, but Josh Smith STILL has more potential under the right tutelage to produce at a higher, more consistent level.

Bogut? MIL fans say no.
Hibbert? IND fans say no.
Asik? A personal favorite of mine - most here would scream bloody murder.
Monroe? DET fans say no.
Lopez? Makes sense but NJ fans promise the answer is no.
Valanciunas? TOR fans say no.
McGee? ... Would WE say yes?
DeAndre Jordan? No, they have Griffin.
Bynum or Gasol? No, 2 times, says their management.
Marc Gasol? Nope.
Cousins or Favors or Kanter? No, they're exciting, young prospects and folks always overvalue that kind.
Kaman? Give me a break. Talk about a backwards move.
Gortat? ...

So we have Asik, McGee or Gortat. In each case, their team does not need Josh.

Without a team that thinks it needs him, his value is low.
Without a team that has the Center we need, our motivation is low.

Kinda hard to trade a guy in that situation.

You are not making much sense. Blatche is Washington's PF, they need Josh or anyone obviously better. Josh value is pretty high as I have stated and for the reasons I stated.

I really think most people are reaching on this. If a credit source that is a NBA writer says we could get a lotto pick plus some, how is his value low to a team that is built incorrectly? We need a Center, a true starting SF and simply put someone that can effectively make Joe the 2nd or worse scoring option. We need too much to try and act like a lotto pick and a player that can fill any of those needs is not enough. Hell if we could get Tayshaun Prince and a lotto pick that would be about fair.

For me, trading Smoove signals a rebuild around Horford and probably Teague. Hence, for me to trade Smoove would mean that the opposing team would need to take Joe Johnson and no salary coming back extends past next season. Of course, we'd want "full" value for both players, but I'd think we be cognizant that our real assets will be coming in our own draft picks...

I actually think after this recent injury Bogut would also be on the table, he's obviously better than Smoove but does that matter when he's always on the shelf? That being said I wouldn't trade Smoove for Bogut at all anymore after this recent injury, I'm just saying that he should be on the table. And I wouldn't think that the Lakers turn down Josh for Gasol, we wouldn't even consider it tho. So I think the list expands to Asik, Mcgee, Gortat, Pau, and Bogut. I would personally love a trade centered around Josh for Mcgee, sure Mcgee is a bonehead but then again so is Josh, but Javale is a center.

Somewhat off topic, but could you imagine Josh playing with a pg like Steve Nash? I know Nash is not the same as several years ago but I think it will take a superior pg to bring out the best in Josh. I guarantee Josh wouldn't be bringing the ball down court with a pg like Nash on the floor.

^ you mean like Vince Carter

Nash is overrated, he doesn't make people better. Kidd is a guy who makes an average player look like an all star. KMart, Jefferson, Kittles, Vince, Rex Chapmen, etc.

Nash isn't really making Childress or Gortat better, Gortat is just getting numbers because he is getting minutes and not sitting behind Dwight anymore.

Yeah the show Mash was overrated. Steve Nash doesn't make the players around him better? You must be on that loud. The point I was trying to make is that it's going to take a great pg to bring out the best in Josh on a consistent basis.

Nash did the same thing for the guys in Phoenix when Joe was there while averaging a double/double. Is Jason Kidd making anyone better now? NO

Steve Nash didn't make MVP (twice) because of his great jump hook...

ATLboy "Bogut is obviously better than Smoove"... want to quantify that statement?

I agree with you, Ruhiel, that Josh is better than Bogut. However, I'd gladly trade them straight up, so maybe I've got my "homer glasses" on and Bogut really is better.

Bogut when healthy is a dominant force at Center, he averages better rebounding, Scoring, and blocking numbers, the problem is he's never healthy. He's a C so that's just icing on the cake. That's just my opinion tho.

Bogut when healthy is just Tyson Chandler.

Chandler is more active and his athleticism shows in stats.

I do agree that Bogut is no better than Chandler, but the Center position is so weak that Bogut is more valuable to a team than Josh, even though Josh is the better player.
