Hawks could emerge as a suitor for Dwight Howard services

Hawks could emerge as a suitor for Dwight Howard services, according to CBSSportsBut a more serious contender could emerge in the coming days: the Hawks, who are dealing with disgruntled should-be All-Star Josh Smith’s own reported trade request. Smith and Al Horford would represent a coup for the Magic considering the alternative of losing Howard for nothing, and Atlanta is Howard’s hometown, where he attended Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. Even with the potential of getting – and keeping – a player of Howard’s popularity and impact, questions remain about whether the Atlanta ownership group would be able to afford two max players going forward. Joe Johnson is owed $90 million over the next four years.
If nothing else, Howard’s familiarity with Atlanta would diminish the biggest impediment for another potential rental team giving up major assets to get him: Aside from it being an untenable gamble in a normal season, it’s even more so in this one. If, for example, Howard were traded against his will to Golden State, he’d play only 26 games with his new team – and only 12 home games in his new surroundings.

Atlanta would have to be insane to give up Smith and Horford for him. Horford/Joe for him would be a good trade for us, but I don't see why they would do it. Although, Otis Smith did give Rashard Lewis that contract and drafter Fran Vasquez with a lottery pick...so maybe he would jump on a bad contract like that.

as to go all out and take some bad contract in return. Josh is helping with his trade demands to force ASG to make a bold move!

That team (DHoward, Smoove, Marvin, Teague) wouldn't be much better than the one he'd be leaving.
If Joe and Howard end up on the same team, now THAT would be something.
Howard needs a wing player capable of creating his own shot to prevent defenses from focusing too much on stopping him down low.

I actually favor shipping Joe to Orlando for shorter contracts and a pick. They are desperate to improve the lineup to convince Dwight to stay. I think Joe improves the roster, but not enough to retain Howard. It's a risky gambit, but the Hawks would get out from that huge contract.

BTW, the rumor that the Hawks are trying hard to get Dwight feels like one of those floated rumors where ownership or front office tries to get create for reaching for the stars when they know that it is unlikely anything happens. It's kind of like inviting someone to a party at the last moment when you know they have other plans. You get credit for the invite even though there was little risk of them attending.

This and Orlando wants to leverage better offers because no one is giving up the farm aka "doing the Carmelo trade".
Sund said way back "you dont trade for superstars". Because the team giving up the star wants to rob you of talent and/or depth so even though you have a top player the rest of the "team" becomes worse. Thus its a lateral move.

Problem is, most other basketball minds say the team getting the better player wins.

Unless you are a free agent "destination", your choices are trade for superstars or trade them. Or in Sund's case I guess you can pay a 2nd tier star superstar money and hope it elevates them (ha).

Horford and Kirk for Dwight
or
Horford, Kirk, and Zaza for Dwight and Turk
Magic should take the deal and run, because this is the best deal they will be able to get from any NBA team.
