Ever consider Joe to Magic?

Post#1 » by saloonyk8 » Thu Mar 15, 2012 5:55 pm

Question: Would you ever consider Joe Johnson to the Magic...assuming we lose in 1st or 2nd round of playoffs this year.

Magic would offer the expirings of Jameer Nelson and JJ Redick. Giving us a ton of cap space (right?) after 2013. We'd still stay quite competitive with Josh and Al.

Ironically, the best FA in 2013 would be D12, but CP3 would probably also be available. I don't know who else we could get.

I'd LOVE to see this move. It frees up cap space to go in a different direction, and it makes them contenders for the next couple of seasons.

Doubt it'll come to pass between two division foes, but I'd love to see it.

And as a fan of JJ, I think he'd regain some form on a team with a consistent post presence and a coach with enough clout and creativity to do away with the all the needless, unproductive isolations.

I was pushing for Joe to Orlando this trade deadline. If they are still willing to do a deal next summer then even better.

To me it's two fold, it is getting out from that huge contract and it's having them stuck with the end of his deal after Dwight leaves. The drawback is that it hurts the competitiveness of the last year of the Hawks window without ownership change*.

*Next year is the last year that the core team can realistically compete together. If they don't make deals in the offseason they'll have Josh, Jeff, and Zaza up for new contracts at the same time. If Joe, Al, and Marvin are still on the salary cap at the time the team will have to make hard decisions on whom they can afford to keep (likely just the RFA of Jeff Teague). I already expect them to deal Josh in the off-season rather than lose him for nothing, but if they do that the resultant product on court might be unwatchable. My feelings are that if you lose Josh, you are likely a boring 8th place team because Joe's personality will still dominate. You need to do what you can to move Joe as well and either build around Jeff and Al or just Al for that matter.
