Cap Situation?

Post#1 » by saloonyk8 » Fri Mar 16, 2012 4:59 pm

What's our cap situation for 2013. Sounds like a lot of big FA will be available...I know we don't have the ideal owners, but I was thinking about this a lot...

Our committments for after 2013 season:
Johnson (18)
Horford (12.5)
Marvin (7.5)

So if we can amnestize Johnson and find a taker for Marvin with only ONE year left at that point...the only person we'd have on contract would be Horford...

CP3 and Howard could BOTH sign here and have Al as the 3rd cog? Wouldn't the cap be around $60M then? Would we have $47.5M in cap space?

I know this sounds crazy but Howard at 19M, Horford at 12.5M, CP3 at 19M, doesn't that work? We'd still have 10M left...Josh?

What am I missing here?

Teague would be a RFA in 2013, so we could renounce his rights if necessary. And we could wait to amnestize Johnson until those other guys made their decisions.

That could be what the owners are doing, only it'd be to gut the team and then sell it. While they were gutting it, they could claim to be preparing for free agency. At this point, I could see them doing that. They didn't sell it the first time they tried but they may be very motivated to dump their investment.

per CNNSI.COM:

Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks are finally set to have major cap room in the summer of 2013, though they get it only because Smith’s contract expires after next season. His potential cap hold would soak up nearly all of Atlanta’s theoretical cap space, and they would also have some money reserved for Jeff Teague, a restricted free agent after next season. Still, the Hawks get a little more flexible at that point than they are now.

btw, we're not going to amnesty Joe. He's our all-star, best scorer and best wing defender; why would we just pay him $20 million/year to NOT play for us?

A trade is more likely. (And yes, there's some fool out there who'd trade for JJ.)

I think DHoward here is a pipe dream. He's never even remotely expressed interest in being here. With our ownership and coaching situation, there's really no reason to even entertain the idea.

CP3...who knows what could happen there?

I agree but only if a championship contender needs a really good SG to be that final piece. Right now, for example, we have the Bulls, the Clippers and nobody else. MIN might become a team like that for us in the future.

It looks more like :

Johnson : 21,466,718
Horford : 12,000,000
Williams : 7,500,000

Note that even if Marvin looks overpaid, if there is a market for SF in 2013, he could very well decide to not use this final year and become a FA, as he would be one year younger than in 2014, and even if he gets a lower salary, he can prefer signing a new long term contract ASAP.
7,500,000 is not something you absolutely want if you can surely gets 20M or more for the following years.

So it will be 40,966,718 for Joe, Al and Marvin or 33,466,718 for Joe and Al

If you want to get all the cap room, you need to renounce every FA rights (Smith, Teague,...), the MLE (even if you will now get a new MLE of 2.5M)...
