Hawks and Ferry get a B+ draft grade

2012 Grade: B+ John Jenkins has been the best three-point shooter in college basketball. He’s almost a replica of JJ Redick, with the same quick release, but has three extra valuable inches on his wingspan. With Josh Smith on the block and changes to be made, I thought Perry Jones and Arnett Moultrie were tough to pass on. But Jenkins’ ability to spread the floor and knock down threes can’t go overlooked. Mike Scott should crack the rotation as well, as a rugged power forward with a polished midrange jumper. The Hawks just improved in two areas of the game, and I like that coming out of a draft. Overall a solid effort for new GM Danny Ferry.2006 Grade: B+ Analysis: On a team stockpiled with small forwards, going with two big men was a good move for Atlanta. However, they still need a point guard, but at 5 taking Marcus Williams or Rajon Rondo was a bigger stretch than taking Shelden Williams. Jones is a nice prospect that will need to put on some weight, but will be a nice back up on a team with a lack of big men. Shelden may have been a stretch at 5, but he’s a safe pick whose impact will be felt immediately. Source:

We missed out on Jones, but getting Jenkins isn't bad at all. Rather have him and a different vet min guy than Willie Green and Stack.

A+ Perry Jones
A Wroten
A Moultrie
A Jeff Taylor
A- Quincy Miller
A- Doron Lamb
B+ Teague
B+ Ezeli
F+ Jenkins
this is the Childress, Shelden pick all over again, their was literally a list of guys i wouldn't have been mad if Ferry selected. Jones is my #1, but i would have totally been fine with a guy like Wroten. this was such a reach, with so much talent on the board, that this is Shelden Williams epic bad.
Jenkins is not only less talented, but he doesn't even fill in a need like Ezeli. the last thing Hawks needs is more 3pt shooting, and a tweener SG. Hawks are just a horrible team to watch because all they do is jack up a tone of jump shots. Hawks need a guy with size or a guy who can penetrate and do something besides take an outside shot.

Like I say, I would have loved Jones, Moultrie, Wroten, or Q Miller, but Jenkins is far from an F. It was B+ move for a guy who can provide an elite skill that we actually lacked, and has more to his game than what people think. He is a future 6th MOY and we drafted him in a good spot.
Would you rather have Stackhouse, Willie Green shooting 3's all day or one of college basketballs most efficient scorers shooting? I mean he is 6'4 with a 6'9 wingspan almost and has great mechanics with an amazing stroke that got him a 65 ts%. He is like Ray Allen lite. Don't forget he was a lock for 20 points despite being doubled and drawing some of the opposing teams best defender most the time. In the NBA he will certainly get less attention and seeing as he operates better moving without the ball will help Teague out significantly.
The only thing I'm disappointed with is the fact that We settled for Adams instead of trading up for Q Miller.

are you high? 3pt shooting is the only thing the Hawks are good at (volume and percentage). are you just making up stuff now?

If Atlanta would have picked Jones or Moultrie, people would have been screaming that it is Billy Knight all over again, taking a combo-wing and a power forward when we are already loaded down at this position.
Was Jenkins a reach? Probably, however he was projected to be an early 2nd rounder. He does give us a needed. With Hinrich likely bolting, that takes away one of our 3-point shooters. If you look at who was our top 10 3pa per game guys, we have only 4 on the roster (JJ, marvin, Teague, and Smith). Jenkins will be a solid player since he is a deadly 3-point shooter. He can stand out and when the defense collapses, he can hit that shot. We didn't have "that guy" last year who could do that, now we do.
