Will Josh Smith now be dumped for a full tanking season?

As a fan of a team where Josh Smith has been rumored to be interested in going and resigning, I'm naturally interested -- does it seem likely the Hawks will now dump Smith for inferior expiring contracts plus picks?

There's no way you'd get enough back in value even for a one-year rental. On the other hand, the move might also make Atlanta's own 2013 pick better. On the third hand, tanking that badly can't be good for team revenue for the season.

So you guys probably have a much better guess about this than outsiders do. Hence the question. :D

maybe, but it would be shortsighted and not smart. things are on the up for the Hawks at the moment, so ATL might as well keep Josh for the season and do what Miami did with Lebron/Bosh/Wade with Josh/Dwight/CP

Hawks can still keep Horford and sign Josh, Dwight, and Chris Paul

Dwight $14.5 million
Horford $12 million
Josh $14.5 million
Chris Paul $14.5 million

Total $55.5 million

Fencer,

truth be told: no one knows. We are in unchartered territory under the new GM. But Marc Stein says Josh Smith is now excited by the moves Ferry is making and may be willing to listen to alternatives to being traded this offseason.

I hear whisper of Dwight being targeted, so....it's hard to say.

When I think of "dumping" a player, I think of trading them for little value.

I believe Atlanta values Smith very highly. That may be one reason why they haven't seriously entertained offers for him. If they got back some stud youth then they could likely trade him, but they may hold on and hope to bring in Dwight some time.

Josh Smith will be kept as an enticement for Dwight Howard.

(Wow. Did I just type that? What a difference a few hours can make.)

If the numbers and the personalities both work out, that would make sense.

Besides, if you're going for Horford/Howard, Smith might be a better fit with them than draft picks.

I hope so because I damn sure don't want him around running stuff trying to get all of his preferred list on the team.

Ferry is a wild card, you don't know who he's going to take the axe too. I'd imagine he'll take a step back from his chess board and contemplate the next few moves over the coming weeks. By the trade deadline I have a feeling he'll know for sure he'll have a better sense of who'll he'll want for his team.
