Elton Brand To Be Amnestied By 76ers
Jul 06, 2012 11:07 AM EDT

The 76ers have elected to use their amnesty clause on Elton Brand, according to sources.

Brand has one season at $18 million left on his contract, which will come off Philadelphia's cap.

The 76ers must wait until July 11th to officially amnesty Brand.

Brand will go on waivers and become an unrestricted free agent if he goes unclaimed.

We could use part or the full MLE to get him and have Zaza/Horford/Brand covering the C and PF spots, in case Josh plays now at SF only.

It's also hard to improve the team for this season, and not kill chances of signing two Max player next summer.
Now, maybe we wouldn't have enough for two (and keep Josh), so if we can sign some help now, and still keep enough room for one Max next summer, it could interesting, but player available won't be available for a long time.

In the same kind of player, Speights is returning with MEM for 4.5M/yr
If signed for a good contract, he could also have a good trade value later.
That's your thought on Brand ?

I know alot of people would bash it, but I like what he brings. If we are having Josh at the 3, having Brand at the 4 would force opposing teams to guard josh with their 3 on the block(seeing Brand and Horfords strong Midrange games). You can't hide a 3 on Brand because he would murder him on the block.

We wouldn't be that strong shooting the ball with only 3 guys on the team (teague, Jenkins, Morrow) being able to knock down shots from the outside, but I like the lineup.

Not a bad idea. I definitely would have been in favor of it when JJ was still here and we were making an effort at going deep into the playoffs.

But with the new direction the team is going, not sure I'd even waste his time. At this point in his career, he'd be better served taking less money and going to a sure fire playoff team.

He's a hard worker, a good guy and I'd hate to see LD do to Brand what he did with T-Mac last year. Erratic playing time with no explanation.

Maybe a return to the Bulls to take some of the playing time left behind by Omer Asik. Or, at worst, maybe see him go to Charlotte and show those young guys how to play with effort and pride every...single...game.

I don't want him to ride the pine in ATL and play once a week when LD remembers he's on the team.

Charlotte is a surefire playoff team but the ATL Hawks aren't?

Elton's competition would be Johan Petro. -_- LD's not forgetting about him. ANd lets not interject Taco-Mac into the convo. Elton Brand just had the best defensive rating in the league, 2nd to Atlanta's own Josh Smith.

24 minutes each for Elton and Zaza Pachulia would be perfect. 6 minute shifts like Doc Rivers.

Jeff Teague / devin Harris
<Morrow - Jenkins>
Josh Smith / Stevenson
Horford / <Scott - Ivan>
Elton Brand/ Pachulia / Petro

That team could be better than last years considering the injuries.

And from my understanding it would be a 1 year deal since he is still expiring.

I don't think he was talking about CHA being more of a playoffs team than ATL, just that Brand would prefer a team that is a real contender, or a team where he can play for sure (maybe for a contract next summer), and that's right that if he saw what happen to McGrady, there's a lot of chance he would hesitate to come to ATL.

Let's be honest, we still don't really know for what reason Drew decided to stop playing McGrady the way he was, and it suddenly kill all the good impact he had on the game.
He was clearly bringing something, and if any veteran saw that, I doubt they will want to play here.
It's nearly the only time I saw a change of use like that.

Elton Brand for sure is no center stop putting people out of position that does nothing but hurt us. If we sign him its for insurance for Al.

D21 understood where I was going with that.

Elton could be a huge boon to our team. But I don't trust LD to play him consistently.

Charlotte is not a playoff team, but they could use a classy vet to show those young guys how to be a true professional and always play with pride.

Elton Brand is 6'9" so no I don't want him to start at C.

But maybe I'm missing something.

Ben Wallace was only 6'9".

Strength, balance, savvy and team help.

I'm not saying Brand could/should play Center. But it's not unheard of. Hell, Kendrick Perkins and AL are only 6'10". There's a severe shortage in big men these days.

I didn't say he should play C, but that if Josh play now at SF only, Brand could be add to Zaza and Al to cover C and PF spots mainly

It would be Zaza and Al starting at C and PF, then Brand would play with Al at C, and with Zaza at C, Brand playing PF only.

Elton Brand is Al Horford's height, 260+ lbs with a 7'6 wingspan. He has the same reach as Tyson Chandler. He's more capable center than Horford.

Its comical to think he would take 1 year deal. I think he goes to Mavs to play center.

After looking at some stats, Brand appears to be effective, but more at C than PF, so he could even be the starting C for 16 minutes and playing 16 other minutes at PF with Zaza at C when Horford is out, Horford playing all of his 32minutes at PF which is what he wants to do.

In the same kind of player that could make a trio with Horford and Zaza, there's also Camby who could come cheaper than Brand.

Elton Brand has always been effective. This year he played more as a 3rd big, and still was effective. Unfortunately he wasn't worth 18 million. If we really are looking at Anthony Randolph, acquiring Brand and letting him teach Randolph, Smith, and Horford could be a great investment. Brand has had a quiet, but impressive career, and I doubt many remember he went #1 coming out of Duke to the Bulls.

it would be nice if Elton Brand was Horford's replacement with L. Williams being Teague's. because we traded Horford and Teague to MCO for Dwight Howard.
