According to Ferry, the moves weren’t easy to make because of the solid contributions of Johnson and Williams over the years, but needed to be done to usher in a fresh start.

“Difficult decision to make in moving guys of that caliber,” Ferry told HOOPSWORLD about making the Williams and Johnson deals. “I think the mindset was that we probably weren’t good enough and the status quo wasn’t going to make sense if that was the case.”

Landing in the middle of the pack is a destination where NBA teams dread being slotted and avoiding mediocrity was clearly Ferry’s motive for the roster shakeup.

“We were right around that fourth, fifth, sixth frame of the East and ultimately if you want to try to get higher than that, then some changes needed to be made,” Ferry added. “Those were the [deals] we were able to make and hopefully we can make some good decisions ahead to put us in a better position.”

“You don’t do things necessarily for cap space,” Ferry said. “Sometimes cap space can be fool’s gold. I think it put us in a position where we can be opportunistic, whether it’s trade or whether it’s cap space; whatever it is to take in players or make trades or actually sign free agents. There are more options available to us right now and hopefully we can make good decisions to put the club in the best position going forward.”

“He’s still a young player,” Ferry said of Teague. “Last year was the first time where he just played. He got to play, totally green lighted. It will be interesting to see how he matures this year and continues to develop with things. It will be more his team. We don’t have Joe. We don’t have Marvin. It will be more of Jeff’s team than it has ever been. I think he’s capable of stepping in and doing a good job with that.”

what i love about it and what Ferry did, is that it not only gives flexibility with the team, but it also makes Josh the focus of the Hawks, along with Horford.

in addition it also gives Teague a lot of room to grow, because like i said all last year, Teague has the talent to be a solid #2.

man, i'm really liking Ferry, he is like the GM i would be if i was in charge. for years i have been saying that Joe and Marvin are movable and that Josh Smith is the best and most important player on the Hawks and i he is actually doing and saying the things i have been saying

their is a reason why they call Ferry an intellectual among GMs, and me and Ferry seem to think the same things on alot of issues with the team

If Dwight doesn't come here I think the Hawks will let Josh leave and tank for a decade or until they land some big fishes in the draft or free agent ala Joe Johnson. ANd there's no guarantee Ferry will stay past his contract.
This could easily become the 2000s all over again.

How can you look back at the 2000s when we have completely different people in the FO? I have more faith in Ferry than I did in Knight. Knight Paid for mediocrity (Speedy), drafted conservatively (Marvin), not to mention trigger happy on trades. He strayed away from any plan, just like he is doing in Brooklyn (Gerald Wallace trade, Joe Trade, Brook Max) to shoot themselves in the foot on Dwight.

From what it sounds like, everyone, including the players, have faith in Ferry. And after pulling off 2 miracles in 48 hours, I'd say the players are excited to see Ferry's plan through!

With Ferry, he had 2 teams (1 a second round knockout, the other a chance to contend for title) and he chose the latter, getting rid of the 2 contracts that were handcuffing us in mediocrity (the optimistic choice of the two). Ferry has a plan and so far has not strayed from it! At least we are seeing change now rather than years from now when we would easily be a 10 year lottery team. At least Ferry is giving us that chance to build a team worthy of a title!

Ferry's contract lasts for 6 years. Will he have built a contender by then? Or drafted a star that can help you contend.

I doubt it. Yes theres a chance but you could easily have Ferry set you up for a good thing then bungle the drafts, or leave it to someone like a Billy Knight.

I think its Dwight or bust. Thats just me.

Billy KNIGHT did have a plan/vision. It was just a very bad one. 5 players, all interchangeable. No real PG or Center. Thus the drafting of Josh Smith, Shelden Williams, Josh Childress, Marvin Williams, Boris Diaw and the signing of 6'8" Joe Johnson.

I do agree that we are in much better hands with D Ferry.

I can see that. But I also see an intelligent GM at the helm that has revamped the scouting department, has cap space, and is vocal with the players. Either way, we should see an improved draft record. That alone makes a bust more exciting.

Dwight isn't the only player on the table that would make us contenders. Look at Dallas' offseason. They missed on Deron, but ultimately improved at the 2, 4, and 5 as well as a team. If we miss on Dwight, I see Ferry resigning Josh, drafting a wingman, and sending offers to CP3. If CP3 is a bust, then Bynum will be called. There are many ways we can improve as a team. But now with JJ gone and Ferry giving Josh the reigns, I see a more vocal leader who will have something to play for (DWade pre-LeBron) and a GM that has found a talent that has been shadowed by the front office and lackluster leadership. I don't see Josh going anywhere and I see Ferry opening his stance in the batters box.

Either way, the Hawks just got a lot more exciting.
