Josh Smith is entering the final year of his contract with the Hawks but it is “unlikely” that he will be re-signed before the end of the upcoming season.

“I’ve been clear that I value Josh as a player,” Hawks general manager Danny Ferry said. “He has worked hard this summer and I believe he is going to have great season. I’ve been in contact with his representatives. Josh and his representatives have been clear that he is excited about the direction of the team and wants to be part of the future in Atlanta. That being said, I don’t expect the contract situation to be resolved until next summer.”

After the 2012-13 season, Smith will be eligible for a five-year extension worth about $120 million

Ferry signaling he is not going to sign him to an extension this year. Not terribly earth shattering news, but I think this is the end of the line for Josh. Unless he puts up astronomical numbers, I dont see how we keep him. hes certainly NOT signing a 5 year 120 million dollar contract? 20+ million a year? Surely not, i see Smith as like a 10-15 million a year guy, not 20-25million (THATS KOBE MONEY).

Very misleading title.

how? He will not be resigned THIS year. Many people thought they would resign Smith to a long term deal before next summer.

Ferry answered that question saying "i doubt it"

I don't know anyone who thought he'd be extended this season considering that it's been discussed ad naseum that he's in the same boat as Dwight and Paul.

Hes NOT saying he wont resign him. Ferry is just saying that he wont sign him to early. Josh has to prove himself and also this is a money play tactic. Ferry wants to see if he can build a little bit in FA before giving Josh and Max contract.

Ferry just doesnt wanna commit the same mistake our former gm did with joe johnson

ive never heard Ferry publicly state that he wasnt even considering a contract extension during this upcoming season.

Ive recently read that ferry is saying this to push Josh Smith to all star level

Financially it just doesn't benefit either side to re-up right now. I'm stil holding out hope for a trade. I think Josh could do big things if traded to a team like OKC.

This feels like a throw away season. Next year is when things get real. New coach, big free agent signing. (Hopefully)

Just hoping we don't embarrass ourselves this year like we did last season.

no big news, that is just the nature of the NBA now a days after what happen with Bosh, Wade, Deron, CP, Dwight, Bynum

Why would Josh resign right now? When right now the most he can get is a 3 year contract where as he can get 5 in the offseason, Josh wants long term and financial security, he can't get that if he resigns midseason. No need to look too much into this guys, it's just a case of Josh looking for security

Danny Ferry knows it's pointless to even off Josh Smith a contract extension right now. Josh should have a career year, and will be able to maximize his earnings/years, by waiting until the end of the season.

In other words Josh is gonna play his butt off for that contract

Pretty much any time we played on national TV in the regular season.

Jan 3rd: The Hawks jump out to a 12 point halftime lead on CHI and completely dominate the first half. Only to see us completely fall apart in the 4th quarter. There's a reason noone takes our team seriously. We embarrass ourselves every time we get a national audience.

Danny seemed to enjoy Josh Smith's game, praising him in a few articles I read. I do understand that the odds of Josh Smith staying are low, but I think Ferry is flip flopping right now. I for one, would love to see Josh stay in Atlanta, but if Danny Ferry has a plan for the Hawks to free up cap space and move completely forward, then that's acceptable too. The ball is in his court.

Me personally, I can see him settling at 10-12 million over 5 years. Really don't see him worth more unless he stays inside and goes ape **** with 20+ ppg, 10 rpg, 2+ bpg, and 3+ apg. Would really like to see him continue doing what he did last year during that stretch where he averaged 24/10/4.5/2/1.5. Match that with Horford, and the newly added shooters and Atlanta can make a run.

Celts fan here. Not trying to stir anything up (honestly), but the whole 'non-extension' thing did get fans on our boards thinking about trying to trade for Smith.

In terms of what we should offer (that would be fair and realistic) the options put forward seems wildly spread. He's just one of those guys who divides opinion, I guess.

Anyways, interested in;

1) If offered a decent package, would you think it's a good move to trade him rather than risk him walking? (based on what I've read, there is still a decent chance he'd resign with Atlanta...I think...?)

2) What type of package would you consider decent? Not so much interested in names, as what would you be looking for (eg. lottery pick and a young swingman, or A centre, so Horford can play PF, plus whatever...etc)

Nicely put. I would also like to see him continue on the path that he was on last year. Talk about a stretch!
