Does josh smith has a future with the hawks
Josh smith is a talented power forward, one of the top 10 power forward in the league. The problem is coming this summer when he becomes a free agent. He is going to want to be paid like a top 5 power forward and u will find some team willing to give him the money he desire. My problem is josh and al horford plays the same position. In order for the hawks to take the next step they are going to have to let one of them go. I say trade josh smith before the deadline and get something for him. The hawks cannot afford to give him the contract he wants so this just may be his last season withe the hawks.

There aren't that many true centers in the east. No one really that Al would have a hard time guarding. Hibbert, Brook Lopez and Bynum are the only big men I can think of in the east. No Dwight Howard in East = No problem come playoff time.
I think Josh and Al are working together better than ever. We should definitely resign him. I don't know which team has enough cap to throw a max out at smoove. Do the teams under the cap need a PF? 5 year 75 mil sounds like a good deal to me.

Or we could just resign Josh and entice Dwight to come here

You think Dwight is going to leave LA and about 25 million on the table to come to Atlanta? I hope so but not very likely.

Re: Does josh smith has a future with the hawks
When Joe was here I thought Josh's future with the Hawks was slim to none. With him gone I'd put it right at 80% Josh stays. We know that Josh and Al are a tremendous and versatile duo and there aren't any if many big frontcourts remaining in the league to really worry about them being overmatched consistently by. Rebounding may be an issue but look at OKC. Perkins and Ibaka are not a great rebounding duo in the least but they receive a ton of support from Durant, Sefolosha and Westbrook. Marvin helped in the past but Joe and Bibby/Hinrich/Teague were total nonfactors when it came to the boards. Josh and Al can and have worked. Keep or upgrade Zaza for special situations and focus more on getting rebounding/scoring from the wings.

Right now josh is getting paid 13 million in the last year of his contract. He is gone least want his next contract starting at 15 a year. Players like josh don't age well. When he start losing his athletic ability exactly what type of player he is going to be. Look what happen to shawn marion. I don't think josh will adapt like that. I still don't believe josh is a max player. i would love to see josh finish his career as a hawk but the price must be right. we cant over pay like we over paid for joe.

This has to be our plan for the future.
I say keep Zaza, but take a look at Oden as well. Probably not going to be the guy he was supposed to be, but can't be worse than Petro. Iggy would be nice at a fair price. At least we could play revisionist history and see how he would have worked in Atlanta. Reke could really give us the scoring boost on the wing, and just bring back Korver. Jenkins, Korver, and Reke rotating minutes at the 2 and 3 spots would be a nice offensive rotation if we could land maybe Udoh or Ed Davis to help the frontcourt.

I could learn to live with Josh on a 5yr 75 mil contract with 80 being the upper limit. I think he would be happy with that and Ferry would be happy with giving that. The differences here from Joe is that:
1) It's not even possible to pay him the amount of money and years as Joe got.
2) He will be younger at the time of his new contract meaning that by end of his prime years (32), even if on a full max, the contract will also be expiring whereas with Joe, he's already 31 with 3 3/4 years still remaining.
3) The Hawks were in a position where they had to overpay Joe because even if he walked for nothing there wouldn't of been enough available cap to pursue a comparable replacement. This isn't the case with Josh's free agency so he and his agent can't expect to hold the Hawks over a barrel in a similar fashion.

I would highly prefer not to pay Josh 5/75. That said, if he got that contract, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Even if Smith is signed to that amount, Ferry can find a trade down the line if things don't pan out.

True, it's just a lil north of what Nene got and he was being talked off as the most important resigning for the Nuggets last season before being moved barely months after getting inked.

Re: Does josh smith has a future with the hawks
Your right the 5 year 75 mil would be a fair deal for josh smith. That would had been the extension josh would have probably have signed last summer. Since he is hitting the free agent market some team is gone be looking to make a splash and offer him more than that. Look what happen last summer Roy Hibbert, or Eric Gordon didnt deserve there contract. If u want the player u have to be willing to pay more. Its some teams out there looking to sign Howard, Chris Paul, and Bynum. As soon as they are gone teams are going to turn their attention to josh and its gone force the hawks to pay more to keep him. I believe josh price on the market is gone be somewhere around 4yr and 72 mil. I hope I'm wrong
