Aussie in GA - best way to travel from Athens to Phillips

Hey knowledgeable folk,

I will be heading over to GA, specifically Athens, and will be looking to take in a couple of Hawks games while visiting. The trip to Phillips looks to be a tad over an hour according to Google maps, but what I would like to know is what is the best way to make the trip?

Public transport would probably be the cheapest and I'm hoping easiest way.

Would appreciate any tips and also other bits and pieces to check out in either Athens or Atlanta.

Thanks :)

I'm not an Atlanta native - I live out of state and drive in once or twice per year. However, the public transit in Atlanta is MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority). This is from their website:
MARTA to the University of Georgia

One of MARTA Guide’s readers requested directions to the University of Georgia. This one is tricky. For one, the University of Georgia is in Athens, GA and not Atlanta, and MARTA only operates in Fulton County in the Atlanta Metro area.

However, Southeastern Stages provides a transit service from Atlanta to Athens at 10:15am and 6:45pm. The Atlanta pick up is at the Greyhound Station at 232 Forsyth Street, which is just outside the S1 Garnett station on the north/south rail line. You can call 404-584-1728 for the station, or 404-591-2750 Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM to verify trip information. Email is driver@sestages.com.

Southeastern Stages also travels to Augusta, Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Asheville, Columbia and more.

Look up MARTA's website. They'll instruct you as to which lines to take to get to Phillips. That particular link is http://martaguide.com/2009/07/28/marta- ... ips-arena/ The first line says this, "Philips Arena is one of the easiest destinations to get to on MARTA. It essentially has its own train station, the Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN station on the blue/green rail line, just one stop west of Five Points."

Hopefully, a local will answer your question better than I did.

Their is no public transportation from Athens to Atlanta. Marta only runs inside Atlanta or what is known as the "perimeter".

my advise would be to rent a car for like $30 a day plus gas and parking.

but if you don't have a driver's license, another thing you can do is take a greyhound bus, which is like $30 one way, or $60 round trip.

but if you can get a buddy to drop you off in a Marta station or Lawrenceville or Snellville bus station, then you can just take the Marta bus and rail into Atlanta

You could try Megabus. It's about 8 dollars round trip, and they have an Athens to Atlanta route.

Megabus could be a go-er and then drive back perhaps. Thanks mate.
