Should we go after J.R Smith this summer

Post#1 » by truehawksfan121 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 7:31 pm

This year jr smith did a whole lot of growing up. He attacks the basket more. And he started to listen to his coach and he attempts to play defense. Jr smith has turned himself into a top 5 shooting guard. I don't think the Knicks can afford to give him a big contract. Should the hawks invest 10+ million in smith this summer.

If that's the sales pitch, what does the criticism sound like?

Pass. If we must (and I'd prefer not to) sign an immature headcase who fights his coach and only tries to play defense sometimes, I'd rather not pay him more than the minimum.

You are right he can be a headache. But the other top shooting guards available are oj mayo , tyreke Evans and monte Ellis. If u ask me jr smith has the most star potential. The hawks need to upgrade that position and center this off season

Pass, I'd rather draft a young SG or even sign Monta Ellis.

No.

Hell, no.

Dude is so unprofessional. Prfanity laced Twitter wars with rappers. Skipping practices. Irresponsible finances. Undermining his coach. Putting his sexual conquests all over the Internet.

This dude is an embarrassment.

He would infect this organization.

Dear God, no.

Please God, no.

I wouldn't overpay him. 6-8 million is the most I would probably give him. He's been a difference maker against us in past years. I still remember when he torched us for 41.

Would anyone think I'm crazy for thinking that Tyreke Evans' best position may be Small Forward? Consider his length and strength. He could be very good defensively over there. And we all know what kind of offense he'd give us from the 3 spot: his dribble-drives would be very effective against SFs.

I'd never want him to be our SG (he isn't that good of a shooter out there) but I might take a shot at using him as a SF.

Ideally I'd want my 1-3 to all be able to drill 3s, maybe even my 4, so I'm not a fan of Tyreke.

In today's league, I don't think you can be a successful wing without hitting 3's unless you're REEEEAAALLY good. Tyreke's just meh in my book.

Historically speaking, 6th man winners, never pan out long term. Very few achieve many years of prolonged success.

Look at the last 10 6th man winners:

2003–04 Antawn Jamison^
2004–05 Ben Gordon^
2005–06 Mike Miller^
2006–07 Leandro Barbosa^
2007–08 Manu Ginóbili^
2008–09 Jason Terry^
2009–10 Jamal Crawford^
2010–11 Lamar Odom^
2011–12 James Harden^
2012–13 J. R. Smith^

Ok so the only players on that list than anyone will remember 10 years from now, is Harden and Ginobili. The rest are streaky players whose careers crash after getting that award. Crawford had a terrible season last year in portland (some of it not his fault) but he did have a great season this year.

I would not overpay for JR smith, and I would not want him on my team.

NO he is a knucklehead. We need to stay away from ALL knuckleheads no matter how talented they are if we want to change the culture.

Not that it matters, but the casual fan may not recognize most of those guys, but someone that is truly into basketball would at least remember Harden, Odom, Crawford, Terry, Manu, and Jamison. If Jamison wasn't coming off the bench for Dallas that year, he wouldn't have even been considered for the award simply because he was a legit starter. He had no business coming off the bench for anyone at that time. Odom was a starter coming off the bench for LA. Crawford has had a solid career, and is much like Odom. Terry has been well known in Dallas. Smith can follow Crawford and have the same success he is having currently. Like I said, It doesn't matter, but I wouldn't look at the past winners and say none of them were worth a toot. Most were starters at one point that found better roles coming off the bench.

not saying they didnt play well, but historically, they crash, HARD. What has

Odom, Terry, MIller, Barbos, Gordon and Jamison averaged the last 3 seasons?

Manu is Manu and Harden has had a great year. JR Smith im not sold on longterm.

Seen his collapse this playoffs? Heard the rumors, complaints of his active nightlife during the playoffs?

Still want him on our team?

As one commentator put it:

If your team is depending on JR Smith to win...your team is in trouble.

He had a good year. But the larger sample size (his career) is a better reflection of who/what he is.

Knicks guard J.R. Smith has been suspended without pay for five games for violating the terms of the NBA's anti-drug program, the league announced Frida

This dude is anything but a grown up. Just as juvenile and irresponsible as ever.

I want him nowhere near my team.

So Glad we didn't pursue this guy:

Mike Woodson and J.R. Smith exchanged heated words after the New York Knicks' win over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday and the head coach chided the guard's shot selection, according to a source.

Woodson also became upset about something Smith said on the bench Wednesday. Smith made a lewd comment, according to the source. Woodson waited until afterward to express his disappointment with Smith’s attitude and reminded him that he’s been his strongest advocate for the past two seasons.

“Mike said that after all I’ve done for you I can’t have you talking back to me like that,” the source said.

During Thursday’s practice, Woodson used the game film from the win over the Bulls to demonstrate moments when Smith forced shots when he could have passed.

Smith’s response to Woodson’s coaching lesson was to attempt one shot in 27 minutes against the Boston Celtics on Friday.

Seriously, JR Smith just refuses to grow up. He's go that ghetto, Iverson syndrome. And in a few years he's going to find himself out of the league as his skills begin to decline.
