what do yall think is the biggest hindrance of getting Dwight and/or CP3?

Perception.

History. (No success in short or long term. Few GREAT players who can recruit for us.)

A lackadaisical fanbase.

Ownership with a bad reputation.

Unproven commodities at GM & Coach and on the roster.

Worst fans in all of pro sports. fans will criticize every little thing about your game online and suggest trades to get rid of you, and those same fans will cheer for the opposing team during the game.

So why play for fans who trash you online and cheer for other guys in the game

That is not true. You would never see people in Orlando, New York, Chicago, Miami, Denver, Philadelphia, Boston ever cheer for the LA Lakers, but in Atlanta, they do it all the time.

All that I know is, back in the Omni days and to an extent here lately at Phillips, I've seen how much this town loves a good basketball product. The Human-Highlight-Film and his team had such a great following in this town when there was nothing else to cheer for. The Braves and Falcons sucked. But they had Spud Webb winning a dunk contest and competing well against some of the best teams in all of NBA history. Those were the glory days of the Hawks as far as I'm concerned. This town has fallen asleep on them though because of so many poor decisions and the changing populous of this city. Like some others have said, this town loves its basketball. It is also a diverse town with so many people coming here from other places with great teams. These fans have not known the Hawks to be anything more than a joke or a unfinished product that's not really worth rooting for. The way to bring them back to that level again is to put a great product on the floor. Whether that's CP3 and/or DH or a complete rebuild with the right players, it doesn't matter as long as they start really competing consistently.

Oh no. Clearly an Atlanta phenomena.

Atlanta is filled with people who from all over the country. more than most major cities. I think that is why they cheer for visiting teams more than other cities. How many New Yorkers do you know who live in Atlanta? When I lived in Atlanta, it was a whole lot of people from up north who moved to atlanta. I live in Chicago now. They are die hard sports fans, but it seems that a much larger portion of the population have been in the Chicago area their whole life.

but yeah, the Atlanta fanbase does bicker and complain more than most fans. There is no denying it. Everyone knows. How many times have you heard someone on ESPN say how sorry Atlanta fans are? It seems like almost every article, in SI or SLAM, about the Hawks, mention their lack of fanbase. The fans that the Hawks do have are never satisfied. I would not be surprised if Josh Smith told Dwight to stay away. its frustrating, Its almost like I hear the same amount of whining now that I did when the Hawks had JR Rider.

All true, reazun. But I think part of the reason ATL Fans (and Hawk Fans in particular) are so fickle is because we've never really had great teams to cheer for. As great as Dominique's was, his teams never made it past the 2nd round. His teams were, essentially, as successful as Steve Smith's teams or Joe Johnson's teams. We vacillate from kinda good to terrible. Never achieving great. Hard to build a lasting fanbase when every season is utterly forgettable.

If you want a fickle fanbase, check out the Bucks fans. They're very passionate, but complain more than any fans I have ever encountered.

Jamaal is spot on. Atlanta will support a championship contending team and Philips would be rocking night in and night out. The last true superstar Atlanta had was Mike Vick and he was treated like a God in Atlanta until he screwed it all up. Atlanta is dying for a superstar and I think the Hawks bandwagon will be overloaded if we land Paul/Howard.

Philips was as loud as any NBA arena that I have seen during the 2007 Celtics series. Atlanta has fans, they just need a reason to be excited as the Hawks have been average for the last 6 years and a bottomfeeder for years before that.

What's ironic: We had a losing record that year and got bumped in the first round of the playoffs. But the fans were out in full force.

People keep talking about how New York, LA, Chicago are big markets and that is why players want to go there, which might be alittle bit true, but people from small markets or bad sports town choose to ignore that, those fans in big market cities are great and support their team, even when they suck. NY and Chicago always sell out regardless if they are a contender or lotto team, and LA, even in the down years, still sell alot of tickets.

In NY, no matter how bad the team is, the garden is always sold out, NY fans will support their teams during the good times and bad, in Atlanta, the fans aren't loyal and will only support a team during the good times.

There was a big laker crowd when the lakers were playing in philly this season.

A few years before the big 3 era kobe was getting MVP chants in boston.

There are tons of laker fans in orlando whenever they arrive. Even this season when dwightmare returned there were still cheers.

There are TONS of laker fans in new york they even have a website dedicated to laker fans in new york...

Miami? LOL I hope you are kidding. They are a transit city just like atlanta. There are tons of laker fans and knick fans there Even during the finals in 2011 there were tons of mavs fans in the crowd during game 6. Doesnt get anymore embarrassing then that.

its because knicks have a long decorated history. They have fans that go back for many generations. You can go on the knicks board right now and there will be fans that will tell that they were raised to be knick fans. their dads/grandfathers were knick fans.

You never see the nets sell out games like the knicks do.

The hawks have an EXTREMELY poor history and never won **** so of course they dont have a true fanbase.

It's called large metro population and easy access to their stadiums. In New York alone you can access any of the only 3 different trains that will take you DIRECTLY to either Barclays, CitiField, MSG, or Yankee Stadium in a half hour or less from multiple hubs. Couple that with a metro population that numbers well above 8 million which doesn't include commuters from upstate, Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut who can all easily access all the major sports venues by train as well and it doesn't become hard to fill out 20k seats (in truth, this doesn't even actually happen) for 42 games a year. That's called urban planning. I won't even get into how a good amount of those seats are corporate accounts either, I haven't paid for and practically find myself turning down free tickets from my job every week. Fact remains, everyone from Jordan, to Kobe to Bron have all received cheers in MSG but that action gets spun from "bad fans" to "oh, no one knows basketball better than New York fans, they are just paying due respect to greatness!"

Like I said, perception.
