Because we saved 4 million per year.
because Smith is undersized as well.
Because Millsap is a much more efficient player than Smith.
Because if Millsap shoots mid-range jumpers we won't cringe every time.
Should we keep going on?

Re: milsap is not better then josh smith
After a while it's less about who's the better player and more about who is the better fit...
Josh just didn't fit what our new GM envisioned going forward.

Its about the $$$
not only money, but also terms. Josh wanted five years, Millsap is willing to only take 2 years and that is the biggest reason why he was signed. Ferry wants flexibility more than anything else. Ferry is just trying to spend money and the real long term plans are with DS, Bebe, Jenkins, and the draft.
Hawks could have easily resigned Josh (or signed Al Jefferson) and been a top four team again this year..... but what is the point, it has been that way for the past 7 years already

Re: milsap is not better then josh smith
Also, Smith kinda wore out his welcome in Atlanta, had we re-signed him to a 4-5 year deal (what he wanted) at around $15 mil per year we would've been a mediocre team without much cap flexibility (we would've had cap just not as much as we want) and with a jumpshot crazed Power Forward who relies on athleticism and whose athleticism will abandon him before the full contract runs out. Millsap took a cool $9 mil per year on just 2 years letting us maintain flexibility in just 2 years or maybe trade him as an expiring next year. Really don't know what Detroit was thinking signing Smith, now they'll be a team hovering around 8-9th for the next few years. The new Milwaukee Bucks.

No...we didn't even offer Josh a contract this summer. He is a head case. ferry wanted him gone and was willing to let him walk for nothing. It only took Ferry 9 weeks to see Josh didn't fit in here.

Josh Smith seems to not be coachable.
I hope that changes in Detroit because I would like to see Josh excel, but everybody in the league understands his flaws, and it has hurt him greatly.

You nailed it, HMFFL. There is a reason no other teams pursued him this offseason. His reputation precedes him as uncoachable. And he was enabled for years by Drew and Sund who never put a boot in his backside like he sorely needed.

that is why he never been voted to an all star game. He has such a bad rep with coaches.

Re: milsap is not better then josh smith
Years ago, the Braves had a young centerfielder, Brett Butler, who would not listen to the coaches. They asked him to bunt for singles more and to slap the ball - just to get on 1st base. He refused, saying he had to be a true hitter. Eventually, the Braves traded him, Rick Behenna and Brook Jacoby to the Indians for Len Barker, who had been a great pitcher. Humbled, Butler finally started playing the game the right way, stole over 500 bases and averaged over .380 in the most important stat for leadoff hitters: on base percentage. So I understand the problem with just letting Smith go.
However, after 9 years, Smith still would not listen. Maybe we've saved his career and he'll become a top-tier allstar but he was never going to make it here.

Re: milsap is not better then josh smith
I wonder what Josh could have become had we drafted him now with the current team/front office that has more of a workman attitude towards winning. He had to discover his own way in this league with the only vets to look up to being Al Harrington and Antoine Walker. These guys were chuckers who bounced around the league. I don't believe they were very good role-models for Josh and Marvin, and it kept this team from realizing their full potential. If those guys were brought in to a team like SAS, they would possibly have completely different attitudes and overall better players.
Josh is by far the better athlete over Millsap. One-on-one, he would dominate Paul. However this is a team game, and Millsap makes much better decisions within the team concept that makes him comparable with what Josh brings. We will suffer not having Josh's defense, but Paul is no slouch in that he is as good as some PGs at getting steals. We won't see the thunder, tomahawk dunks, but we will also not see the random, misguided 3pt shots. Paul passes as well as Josh and has a much better attitude. I think, also considering his contract, we have the better option for this team.

are you delusional or in deinal? Josh got meetings and offers from the Pistons, Rockets, and Bucks. not only that, but Ferry offered him an extension last season

Not delusional at all. Milwaukee and Houston never made actual offers. They had other priorities. D Ferry DID offer Josh an extension last summer, but after nine weeks of actually watching Josh up close he started trying to trade Josh midseason. He had no intention of signing him this summer; he wanted a sign and trade...but there were no takers. There's a reason Josh accepted such a low contract this summer:
This was my only option,'' Smith said. "I didn't have any other options.

He is a dunce. We actually offered him a three year extension worth $15 million per season. He signed a four year deal worth $13.5 million per season with a losing team.
Ferry did not extend the offer again this summer, because he realized Josh is not the type of player you can build around.
Smoove thought he was a max player, but no one else in the world agreed with him.

Milsap is not better than Josh? Really?
Depends on what you consider better. Josh is / was much better when it comes
to being "The Highlight Factory" with all his exciting dunks and swats. No doubt.
Josh was probbly better at trying to play all five positions at once, by himself. Look!
I'm the point guard - I'm the 2 guard - watch me shoot this long two. I am so good
at the free throw line. Watch as I stand back here and hit 50% of my shots.
For an additional 6 million per year and 15 million more for three more years we could
have kept Josh here. Why?
Josh was one of ours and we loved him. He did wonderful things. He did stupid things.
He was unable or unwilling to change. Maybe he will in Detroit.
Maybe Milsap won't be as exciting as Josh. Probably not. But, I'm betting that he will
be a better team player and I'm betting he will shoot better than Josh has recently.
Side note: Yes Brett Butler started his baseball career in Atlanta. At the time, Braves
fans were reminded of the classic, "Gone With The Wind" centered around Atlanta and
one of the leading characters, Rett Butler and how ironic to have our very own Brett Butler.
