Looks like the Hawks got an exception worth $5.25 mil that must be used before Mar 10th because of Horford's injury. It also seems that we may be the only team that doesn't have to do much in order to use it in terms of roster moves. Now that we have it, now might be a great time to make a trade to improve our team. I can't see Ferry allowing that money go to waste. We will see a deal soon!

Any potential ones come to mind?

-Signing Ivan?
-Trading for Montiej?
-Moves for Pau or Asik?

IIRC the DPE works much like a TPE in that it can't be combined to take on a bigger salary. So unless we're willing to eat another contract, I can't see the DPE helping in a deal for a player like this.

Having said that, there are some interesting options out there with salaries under the DPE. Some that jump to mind are J Thompson, C Hayes, and Zaza. I could see us getting any of the 3 for nothing more than the DPE. If we'd want to go in that direction or not is a completely different question...

Much thanks for correcting me.

And of the three players you mentioned, I really like Jason Thompson as a solid front-court addition.

Would using the DPE to get Zaza back be admitting error?

lol - I actually got Thompson's name from you in a different thread when Horford first went down.

I still like the name although he isn't quite the slam dunk he was then. Antic has really come on and I could see him as a viable #3 big next season while Thompson is having a career worst year and is signed for 3 more @ MLE $$. IF Thompson recovers then having some big man depth isn't really a problem. OTOH, if Thompson continues to spiral, then we could be stuck with a truly terrible contract.

I think I'd still take the chance but I could see why DF would balk.

According to Coon the DPE is only applicable to players either signed to only one year (or remaining of this season) or on the last year of their contract if they are traded for.

If this exception is granted, the team can acquire one player, via either trade or free agent signing, to replace the disabled player:

The team may sign a free agent for one season only, for 50% of the disabled player's salary or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, whichever is less.
The team may trade for a player in the last season of his contract only (including any option years), who is making no more than 50% plus $100,000 of the disabled player's salary, or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception plus $100,000, whichever is less.

This would exclude the whole trio of Thompson, Hayes and Zaza but would include a *quickly browses Sham* Chris Kaman...

Did we ever end up using this? Was this a part of the Jamison trade? Or the 10-day contracts to Nunnally, Pittman? Did we use it to sign Martin for the rest of the season? Was it perhaps used to pay Mike Muscala?

Looks like it expires in a couple of days otherwise...

Don't think we ever ended up using it. Muscala was likely signed with the Jamison money.

All of these moves would have been covered by the minimum salary exception except for Muscala's signing. I don't know what we used for Muscala's signing (or even if we needed to use anything), but I do know that it couldn't have been the DPE due to the number of years on the contract.

I think the answer here is "no" although tbf, no one else did either. We were in discussions with LAL over Kaman and Hill where I'd assume that we were attempting to use the DPE to acquire one of those players (this was the same deal BRK had on the table as well). LAL was also asking for assets for Hill though and this was a demand that even BRK would not yield to.
