Rival Execs Were Tired Of Hearing One-Sided Offers From Cavs' Grant

Grant had spent the final months of his tenure as GM pitching one-sided deals to his peers from other teams, clearly overvaluing his young draft picks in offers for the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge, Anthony Davis and Andre Drummond. Few executives maintained the patience to listen to Grant's pitches.

Of course, the GMs criticizing him might be unfair. We're not shown any of Grant's offers. On the other hand, this is from Wojnarowski, so it probably has traction.

lol so he made an offer for drummond even though he had an opportunity to draft him over a year ago.

And the rumor is that he tried to value Waiters - in that trade - the way he had originally valued him when he drafted him. Basically, he argued that the #4 pick was more valuable than the #9.

Yeah, this was actually the fear I had in dealing with CLE. Grant knew that he was going to lose his job and one of the big hits to his tenure was his repeated failings at drafting. Therefore, the only way for him to save face was to trade one of them for top dollar. Problem was that they weren't worth top dollar anymore.

Hopefully, their new GM will right the ship and get the roster back in order. More sooner than later.

I remember around the draft that the offer with Aldridge was that the Cavs were offering the #1 and 19 picks for him and with Love they were offering the #1, Thompson and Waiters. Yea, that could be the textbook definition of one-sided.

He didn't draft Valanciunas because his friend was Thompson's agent.
He didn't draft Drummond because Drummond didn't match Thompson.
He didn't draft Olidipo because Olidipo was too much like Waiters.

Thinking they would have still taken Waiters over Drummond if they had Valanciunas instead of Thompson.

Still, I can't describe how many times I've seen someone go against the conventional wisdom in the draft only to see themselves stuck with the decision come the next draft. One instance here would be our drafting of Marvin Williams instead of the conventional wisdom of trading him for one of the PGs who were expected to be drafted right behind us. Just seems that it's how things work out more times than not.
