Totally forgot about that pick we got from Minnesota! The Thibs hire effects us as well then. If Minnesota can reach the playoffs as early as next year we will be looking at two 1st round picks next off-season.

I think that pick is top 14 protected in 2018-2020, so the first year it could be transferred is in 2018. So, Thibs has 2 years to develop and build the team before the pick comes into play.

Yep, your correct. Just looked it up. I thought it was lotto protected from 2017-2020.

The pick is protected from 2017-2020. So if Minny makes the playoffs in the 2016-2017 season we get the pick in 2017. Or am I missing something

Chris Vivlamore ✔ ‎@CVivlamoreAJC
Hawks pick from Timberwolves is from 2017-2020 protected 1-14. #ATLHawks

Brian Windhorst ✔ ‎@WindhorstESPN
The first round pick the Wolves are sending the Hawks is lottery protected from 2017-2020 according to sources.

The first-round draft pick the Hawks are getting is lottery protected in 2017. If the Wolves are in the lottery from 2017-2020, it will become a second-round pick.

wolves_89 is wrong. The pick is lottery protected from 2017 to 2020. Then it turns into a 2nd round pick

Thibs is not a good coach. He is a good regular season coach but a really bad playoff coach. I have no doubt that Thibs will get the wolves into the playoffs in the west. I think he can make the wolves with KAT and Wigs into a top 4 team in the west, but they will crawl before they can run, so i see them making the 8th seed in 2017 or 2018. So the Hawks should be able to get the 15th or 16th pick in the next two years.

Lets see what Thibs can do with Payne. Maybe he can turn AP into a solid starter like Gibson, or maybe Payne will end up being in China by 2020.

The thing about Thibs is that he is not really known for developing young players, he really only likes coaching vets and if Payne ends up being Thibs dog house early on, Payne might not have much a career in Minn.

Didn't both Joakim Noah and Jimmy Butler develop into All-Stars under Thibs?

Even Taj Gibson emerged as a rotation player while Thibs was coach?

Do we not count these guys as young players in 2013 and 2014?

Noah was already decent before Thibs joined. Gibson's numbers actually went down alittle bit when Thibs took over, but i will give Thibs full credit in developing Jimmy Butler, so good for him with Jimmy.

Chicago fans also blame Thibs for ruining Deng's career in Chicago.

Alot of Bulls fans blame Thibs for not developing Rose properly. Some Chicago fans also blame Thibs for miss managing Kyle Korver.

These are definitely valid criticisms.

I think the Wolves could be in the playoffs as early as next season. Minnesota was awful defensively this season and I expect Thibs to come in and install a defensive system right away--that's kind of his calling card. I'm still interested to see who he brings in as his assistants. If he can snag an offensive guru then they are in excellent shape.

I was expecting the Wolves to be in the playoffs no later than 2018, anyway, due to the development of their young players and potential top 5 pick this year. Thibs coming in might expedite that to 2017.

8 seed for Minnesota would be ideal. Would suck if they just miss out at 9th place next year, and make the jump into the top 4 the year after.

I've seen it listed on 4 different sites that track traded future draft picks as top 14 protected from 2018-2020. One of the sites gave details that might explain the confusion:

"protected top 14 and conditional in 2017 if Timberwolves convey 2015 first round pick to Celtics from previous trade, protected top 14 in 2018-20, else 2020 second round pick, 2021 second round pick"

So did the TWolves convey at 2015 1st to Boston?
The last link is confusing it says "Hawks receive the Timberwolves 2018 first-round pick. (lottery protected in 2016-2020 or 2020 and 2021 second round picks."

The Wolves did not convey a 2015 first round pick to the Celtics.

Forgive me, UGADawgs. Just taking a minute to give credit where credit is due.

SBM called this 3 years ago...and was 100% correct.

A tip of the hat for some pretty spot on predictions from the very start of this kid's career.

Funny, I heard a MIN beat writer (or w/e) speaking on their prospects to trade for Kyme Irving. In passing he mentioned that the Twolves can't trade their '18 1st rounder because they sent it to ATL in the Payne trade "in an awful move they'd like to have back" or STTE. Made me smile.

Wow. that is spot on. In fact a couple are a little optimistic. What a friggin horrible draft for the Hawks.
