Latest on Salmons

Post#1 » by theatlfan » Tue Jul 1, 2014 1:36 am

Apparently Salmons agreed to delay his waiver until 7/10. Helps us a bunch since it means we can deal him again for a team willing to eat the $1M on his contract or we could decide to just keep him (would prefer this to signing Deng for > 1 year). No idea what's in it for Salmons though.

1. This makes me think we'll be waiting at least a few days before Ferry's endgame is revealed.

What does he get out of it though? He waits on the sidelines while the Hawks play in the FA market and when he's cut at the later deadline the market will have largely been filled up.

Not sure what exactly is in it for him... for us it's beneficial because then we can move him as part of a S&T to match salary.

I agree with Ferry that is more likely we get a real difference making via trade than free agency. We need more than Gasol or Monroe though. We need a starting level SG or SF to go with that.

:o

I 100% agree.

Horford and Teague...PLUS Gasol and a scoring wing makes us very tough to cover in the playoffs.

If we strike out in free agency, any chance we just keep Salmons on the roster? He plays SC/SG which is a need for us and he is an expiring contract which has trade value during the season.

How do folks feel he would fit in our system, which our current roster?

I don't think so. In a vacuum, it could make sense, but I would guess Ferry would prefer to use the cap space to take on a salary dump over carrying Salmons.

The issue with trades is that he can't be added to another salary to match a larger salary at this juncture but the team does have pre-existing cap where that wouldn't be neccesary.

As to the benefit for him? The possible chance that he may end up making 7 mil this season, something he's unlikely to total over the rest of his career on the market. He is 34 after all.

Can you explain? I recall in the last CBA traded players were eligible to be included in S&T deals. Is there something I'm missing?

The issue isn't the SNT, the issue is that Salmons was recently acquired in a trade. If you trade for a player you can't turn around and combine him with more players in another trade - he has to be traded alone. There are ways around this though: we could deal Salmons for SNT player and create a TPE that we can then use to send more player to the other team through in what would technically be a 2nd (and 3rd, etc) deal.

All this really means is that we can't be involved in a deal where we send out Salmons and others in which we were to send out more $$ than we take in. Considering our cap, I don't see this as a realistic scenario though...

could you see us shipping salmons to the clippers for jared dudley?

not a sexy pick up by any means and slightly overpaid at 4.25 but does fit our "mold" competitive shooter w/ good character. can pass.

salmons is now our most valuable trade asset. many teams would be interested in giving us a player (contract) to waive salmons themselves and save cap.

should be interesting!

Salmons could be traded for Kevin Martin or JJ Barea is all you need to know.

^I was thinking boston takes salmons to waive him and save cap space and we absorb green's contract. still not a terrible option.

the fun part is that nobody has any clue of ferry's plans

darius miller wasnt extended a QO by NOLA his interesting. not sure how high his ceiling is though.
