Charlotte just signed him for 2/14.

You guys know Marvin Williams best because he was in ATL for the better part of a decade. What are his strengths and weaknesses, and are we totally screwed if we start him at power forward?

Marvin is a great defender on Small Forwards but can get muscled around and draw alot of fouls against Power forwards fighting them for position.

Offensively he is really good at drawing fouls on opposing PF's but against Small forwards is almost completely useless on offense unless his jumper is falling.

He is all ways a great defender, feast or famine on offense (more famine than feast) If his jumper is going, you can see why people thought he was going to be special, but on most nights he is a defensive role player with nonexistant offense.

Utah fans seemed split on his defensive impact, but he was recovering from an Achilles tear, so would you say that likely limited him, and he's usually a more athletic defensive player than what he showed in Utah?

Didn't watch him much in Utah but in Atlanta he had good lateral quickness defending the perimeter but would still sag off just a bit to prevent getting blown by off the dribble knowing that he had the length to still bother the shot if the offensive player pulled up for a jumper. Is quite a bit uncoordinated and lacks core strength so in the post he's susceptible to getting bullied out of position and if he guesses wrong on a move and gets his momentum going in any direction he's unlikely to recover quick enough. Overall solid defender though, doesn't gamble on plays and works to just keep his man in front.

On offense he was decent in transition early in his career but as he developed his jumper he became more of a trailer on the break rather than getting out to finish. He improved his 3 ball but at the expense of his midrange jumper which was pure money. Was pretty decent shooting off of cuts and curls but is now predominantly a spot up shooter. Is awkward in the post and his only other means of scoring is a pump fake and go and pray for a foul call but typically just results in an awful layup attempt or block and horrible fall to the ground.

His biggest issue is his confidence. Too often fine with just letting the game come to him and never forcing the issue even if he's needed to step up. Will find yourself asking on numerous occasions "where's Marvin?" as he's glued still at the corner of the arc or as we aptly named it, the "Marvin corner".

Decent role player but the problem that we had with him in Atlanta was that he was getting paid too much for what he brings (and the issue with where he was drafted and over who). At 7 mil a year I see the same problem with Charlotte.

Agree with most of what was said, except I don't think he has confidence issues. He just likes to be low key and play very passively.

Also his handles suck, so don't expect him to do any creating.

He's slow for a SF, can't dribble or create his own shot and can't put the ball on the floor, puts way too much pressure on your guards for that reason. Too weak to play PF. His D at SF position is decent but he's not going to impact your team or its record very much. He would play 35 min and you couldn't tell he was on the court. Never like his demeanor (very passive) neither his game. Now, the NBA salary structure has been crazy this offseason. How does a guy like Marvin get 7M/season is WAY beyond me.

He has serious back issue and is now a shell of his former self. Before all of the injuries he was an extremely explosive player and good lock down defender. He was not a guy who got alot of steals or blocks but he played great man to man defense and could stay in front of anybody. He is great at defending the SG/SF spot, but really struggles in defending the post. Offensively in Atlanta, he was never asked to do much, and as a result was poorly coached when he was in his prime.

Streaky outside shot, not really able to create his own shot anymore or go to the line. Marvin might still be a good system guy who is just asked to shoot open 3s, like how James Posey was at the end of his career.

I think 7 million a year for Marvin is a really bad deal for the Hornets. Especially when Thabo is only getting 4 million a year.

Margins frustrating lack of offensive impact makes people not notice how good he is defensively, but stats don't lie.

What Williams does doesn’t show up in box scores, such as denying the ball to Kevin Durant by smothering him for 12 straight minutes, holding him to 1-2 shooting and two points, key to a defensive plan predicated on forcing key opposing players away from their preferred spots and shots."

There is more there, but he is really good defensively and really bad offensively. If you are a team that can survive his lack of offensive production then you are fine. If you are going to need him to score...well...that's not a good idea.

and therein lies the problem. Charlotte needed an upgrade on offense more than an upgrade on defense.

I mean its a bad signing because it was for 7 freaking million dollars. But you know Jordan and his North Carolina guys.
