Melo says future free agents will spurn Hawks

Carmelo Anthony said on Saturday that future NBA free agents will be hesitant to sign with the Hawks based on statements from general manager Danny Ferry.

"[There] ain't nobody [who] would want to go there," Anthony said. "At the end of the day, Atlanta, I think it puts Atlanta back even further now, from that standpoint." Ferry had some interesting comments on Melo, saying he would "absolutely" be worth $20 million per season if he was used the right way. Ferry is on an indefinite leave of absence and his future with the Hawks isn't looking great.

Ferry can recover from this fiasco and work in a back-office position with another franchise.

But he simply can't return as GM of the Hawks. This is just further proof of that. Carmelo just said what we've all been thinking this past week:
The ruckus caused by Ferry repeating these words at work in the wake of the Sterling case (and becoming public) makes it impossible for him to do his job.

In truth, I'd be okay with him taking months off and then in January/February returning to work in a different position.

But he can't be the guy who reaches out to Free Agents.

NOTE: If we're lucky, this statement by 'Melo and sentiment by other players will force us to alter our approach to acquiring top players. Instead of trying to outbid the league for them in FA, we need to trade for them.

From this point on, we need to be acquiring assets in trade, not dumping talent simply for cap space.

Hes just pissy because ferry dissed him in the audio right before beginning to talk about Deng.

Top Free Agents have spurned the Hawks for years. Now, prominent players state publicly they (and other players) will be unlikely to sign here in light of Ferry's fiasco.

And you still refuse to believe?

I don't think ferry dissed him , he said he was worth 20million and he could shoot.

Melo and Korver now have both publicly said they didn't want or like the hawks culture\regime.

What else do you need to hear?

How about hearing Korver's quote in it's entirety....he found that the perception he had of the Hawks was not what it actually was, so much so that he reigned with the Hawks.

Korver said he had heard bad things about the Hawks culture, but was proven wrong once he got here and saw how Ferry was doing things.

Please link me to the quote where Korver said that he disliked the Hawks current regime. He actually said that he loved it and would hate to see it cease to exist.

I personally don't think that Ferry's actions warrant a firing, but it looks like it will lead to him being fired. I'm alright with that as long as ASG goes with him and Bud sticks around for the long haul. If Bud leaves and ASG stays, this team will be miserable for years to come unless the NBA decides to throw us a bone with the lottery.

Might as well throw Gasol in there, whom DF tired to temp at the last minute. The only DF did is improve another Eastern team with his negotiations.

I'm fairly confident we could have gotten Gasol months earlier, but this organization knows what they're doing.....yeah.

Sigh

Guys the ASG OWNS THE HAWKS AND KORVER SAID HE HAD HEARD HOW INEPT THE TEAM WAS AND HE DIDNT WANT TO COME HERE.

Yes I realize he said he believes in it now probably more specifically coach bud, but I'm sure he thinks the current owners are still asshats.

Point is we are hearing now outright what a joke the hawks are, this scandal doesn't improve that

Do you really think he was talking about Bud? It seems pretty clear that he is talking about Ferry. He had also given Ferry his vote of confidence by resigning with the Hawks before Bud had coached a single game. Here's the quote from Korver.

Q. What is your reaction to everything that has happened?

A. My thoughts are, when I got traded to the Hawks, I didn’t want to come here because all I knew was what I had heard, about bad culture and no fans and no excitement in the city. So I didn’t want to come to Atlanta. At all. I was bummed to leave Chicago. But by the next summer, I chose to re-sign and come back to Atlanta. After a year of watching what Danny (Ferry) was doing and the people he was bringing in. Everything I saw, was so attractive to me and I really believed in it. I believed that he was going to turn things around. I saw that Atlanta was an incredible city, and that there was so much potential here to both raise my family and help build a great basketball culture. I had some opportunities to go to places that were already established and played really good basketball but I wanted to come back here and be a part of building this. I think in all this, I’m hopeful that when the dust settles, it keeps on going. I really do believe in what has gone on in the two years that I have been here. I think anyone who knows the game and has watched the transformation would agree with me. But it’s just sad what’s all going on. That all this has happened has really bummed me out.

I'm not saying korver doesn't want to be here NOW, my point was he said he knew of the hawks reputation before he came here.

NOW, melo says that no one wants to come here either especially after this.

So all the good karma we got back last year, with bud, gone. As long as ferry remains

I don't find Melo to be the most trustworthy person. He would never choose the Hawks either way, since he only cares about money. Melo claimed that he was going to put winning first and didn't care about money. If that was true, why is he still in New York with a capped out team, rookie coach & gm and no 1st round pick?

Of course not, but I think Ferry played an equal part in that good karma. I've already said that I believe we will be ok as long as Bud stays. I do believe we will take some sort of step back when losing Ferry though. I believe he has been a better GM than most on here give him credit for. I also believe that injuries played a major factor in his ability to land a highly-touted free agent this offseason.

I'm just terrified in losing Ferry, ASG staying and then Bud running for his life. This scenario equals the death of this franchise in my eyes. We will be set back by a decade if this scenario happens. I think Bud will stay as long as ASG leaves. I wouldn't blame Bud, for a second, if he chose to leave after his friend was fired and an incompetent ownership, who can't be trusted, remains in place.

They just want to look good, they don't care about racism unless they are getting bullied regularly by racists(No way that would happen today in the league). CP3 and co had to hear about Sterling and they did not care.

A few things to remember:

-Chris Paul is a single person. He doesn't represent the mid set of every black player in the NBA.
-Hearing whispers of your boss's boss's boss having shady business practices with minorities is very different than being confronted with it directly.
-No one in NBA circles really considers Ferry a racist. (Not Deng, not opposing GMs, not former co-workers) But this entire scenario reeks of a lack of leadership and a culture of buffoonery and indifference from Ferrys front office.
-Chris Paul, Lebron and other NBA players were prepared to boycott the NBA playoffs if Sterling's punishment was not considered sufficient by the NBPA. (LeBron has direct line to Adam Silver.)
-This Hawks organization was always a tough sell to TOP FREE AGENTS. This whole sad affair simply makes it MORE difficult to attract players of great talent here.

Take it from a black person who has occasionally been Head Hunted by recruiters in Corporate America. If I'm choosing between multiple offers and one of the companies has a history of racism/cultural insensitivity/misogyny/ageism, I'm likely to eliminate that company from my job search first.
