Is Javele McGee a good fit here? He'd come cheap for the stretch

He has talent; can he pick up what he needs to know in 20+ regular season games?
It doesn't sound as if Ray Allen is interested in playing at this point, and we have an open slot still.
I sure would inquire.

quite possibly the lowest IQ in the NBA today for a big man. Considering that was prob why we let Payne go, we will have NO interest in Mcgee.
We are looking for a wing IMO, thats been made pretty obvious

He has such low basketball IQ. He can sporatically rebound and block shots, by for every block he is goaltending 2 shots that had no chance of going in. Offensively...well...yeah.
You watch a guy like that and his physical gifts and just wonder how in the world is he not better than he is. I would fear taking him on.

Based on what his role would be, I can see Bud giving him a look. Hes not a 3 point threat, but you never have enough defense, and having insurance is not a bad thing.
We arent' above the cap, taking on a big cost, and I would like to see how much Bud could do with him.
i dont think I'm reaching here after watching all I want to see from our other bigs.

Hes not an elite rebounder or defender. He has NO offensive game what so ever. hes extremely athletic, but hes never panned out anywhere.
We arent looking for a BIG, we are looking for a guard, a wing player.

He may not be 100% healthy as I had forgotten about that stress fracture.
Its possible that slot is either Ray Allen's or no one gets it.
That's what it look likes.

I'd actually like to take a shot on him as a project player. He's still young (27), obviously is a freak athlete with ridiculous arms, and he seems like a high character guy who tries hard.
I just don't think he's ever been in a situation where he's actually been coached by anyone half competent. Randy Wittman? Flip Saunders? Eddie Jordan? Ed Tapscott (who the eff is that?)? His best coach has been George Karl, and in those seasons he actually was starting to get into form.
Yeah he's a bonehead but I think you can coach out a lot of that.

JaVale McGee under George Karl (2012-2013)
20.7 PER
.589 TS%
Per 36 stats of 18/10 w/ 4 blocks
+1.2 RAPM
I think signing him would be a really low risk, high reward type move. Worst come worst we just waive him for minimum salary.

I'm pretty sure he's actually a smart guy outside of bball. Makes me think he might have potential to gain bball iq.

Don't sit here and pretend Pero Antic has a high bball IQ. 7 feet tall, yet does nothing but shoot 3s even though he's a 20% shooter.

My problem is I don't see us picking up a big man with low IQ when we just traded a big man with low IQ

Good BB IQ?
Can stretch the floor?
Can pass the ball?
Good teammate?
Easy to coach?
Yeah, great fit with Hawks

McGee could be okay in situational possessions in the 4th quarter, but still, i don't think he would have enough time to pick up the Hawks system.
Here are the some other names the Hawks should look at:
Austin Daye
Seth Curry
Arnett Moultrie
Erik Murphy
Murphy and Daye have spent some time with the Spurs, so they could pick up Budz system by playoff time, maybe. Seth is a great 3pt shooter that is still available and it wouldn't be too bad to have him at the 12th guy. Moultrie is an SEC guy, 7footer with good feet, and half a decent jump shot.
