I am a season ticket holder for the last 5 years. I am not FROM Atlanta (not a native, from Boston).
The Hawks have been god awful or mediocre for the better part of 20 years. they have had terrible ownership saddled with bad drafting and terrible contracts. That kind of killed the fan base, it was tough to believe in a team that you knew was being run like Dolan runs the knicks.
Add to that the Hawks Ownership completely GUTTED the Thrashers NHL team the year AFTER they made the playoffs to save money. That same ownership controlled the Hawks so it was always tought to believe in that ownership.
Atlanta has been a city of ALMOSTS for the last couple years. The Falcons getting VICK and being on the cusp of being great, then he gets FED charges and we lose everything. Petrino leaves. Matt Ryan 10 yards from the SB, blah blah blah. Braves perennial 1st round exits in MLB Playoffs. Fans here just kind of got used to underperforming teams.
Add in that Atlanta has a TON of transit fans (fans from other major markets) it can be difficult.
I can honestly say this year is different though. The crowds have been great, selling out, and no longer is it the opposing teams fans drowning out the Hawks fans. So not sure what you are looking at. Its also easy for places like TOR or OKC or MEM to have rabid NBA fans because they really have no other major sport to compete with.
OKC/MEM, they have NBA, thats it. NO NFL, NO MLB, TOR has what? NHL?
