Budenholzer had been hired as head coach of the Hawks just shortly before that offseason. Budenholzer had scouted Teague coming out of Wake Forest and had met him through Brett Brown.
Teague's father, Shawn Teague, was a teammate of Brown when they were both at Boston University playing for a young Rick Pitino.
Teague's talents had been previously wasted under Larry Drew. Drew had been let go as head coach of the Hawks and wanted to sign him now that he was with the Milwaukee Bucks.

HereTeague has indeed played well (mostly) under Bud's watch.

Though I'd dispute that Teague's talent was wasted under Drew. He was under utilized, but that was more a result of roster construction and a certain malcontent of a PF who thought he was the '6'9" Jason Kidd'. There also was the concern of his erratic play and tendency to be very passive for long stretches of the game. Those issues have been largely minimized under Bud.

The player who has vastly improved the most under Bud/Ferry has to be teague. Hands down.

Was always a big fan of Teague, which is why it drove me crazy when he never got a real chance in his early years. I remember being so scared that we weren't gonna match his extremely reasonable offer sheet, Ferry kept me pacing until the last day but I'm glad they made the right choice.

I remember being so pissed off that Denver jumped ahead of us and took Lawson. I thought we missed out on a franchise changing PG. I was very high on Lawson, and he has definitely turned out to be a good pro, but I wouldn't trade Teague for him. Teague's progression has been beautiful to watch. He didn't get much of a chance to flourish when he first got here due to iso Joe and potato head, but he finally has a real coach and system that has enabled him to be very successful.
