I doubt it. Dieng's 2020-2021 salary makes this a no-go. Moving up 10 spots isn't worth losing those two 2nds and eating that amount of salary.

I know this isn't the answer you are looking for, but I'd definitely give up those 3 picks to move up to 7. There's absolutely no reason for the Hawks to add another bad contract considering this is the last year of bad contracts we have left. We are going to have endless possibilities next off season to go after whoever we want and we will still have multiple firsts (probably 2, maybe as many as 3).

I do imagine we'd consider it, but we'd ask for modifications for taking on Dieng's two year contract.

Likely, we don't give up #17 but instead offer CLE's top-ten protected 1st rounder (that likely defaults to multiple 2nd rounders after next summer)

First, just a small correction... it's #35, not #36.

And yes, I'd tell Schlenk to do that deal.

From ATL's perspective, the target year for a free agency splash isn't until Dieng's contract finishes. And the inclusion of Plumlee in the deal mitigates the salary hit this off-season such that he can still have some room to maneuver for other small free agent acquisitions. Then, finally, having #7, #8 and #10 sets up all kinds of even better possibilities for either this draft or the next.

I still wouldn't bite on this trade the way it is right now. I like Len as our long-term backup center. I'm actually hoping we find a way to resign him after this season to a team-friendly 3 or 4 yr contract. I don't think moving up 10 spots is worth locking up another $17m next year and losing Len. I think TS will find a better package to get another lottery pick this year without taking on 20/21 salary.

Um. Len will be a free agent regardless next off season... if Schlenk wants him that bad, he can still go back and get him.

Effectively, you're giving up #17+#35+#41 and a 2020-21 $17m cap hit for #7.

I don't think you necessarily obtain #7 with an eye toward actually drafting a third top 10 2019 player, but you might.

With three picks in the top 10 and more specifically 3 of #6-#10, historically speaking (last 20 years), you effectively have gained for yourself about a 20% shot at a multiple-top-5 MVP vote player, ie elite/cornerstone.... which doesn't sound like much until you consider that even having the #1 only gives you a 30% shot.

But there's also the potential perhaps to convert some of this and next year's stash into a package that tempts CLE into dissolving all or most of the protection on their 2020 pick.

And that's just for starters... the possibilities are many.

I hear you. I think the possibilities are many already though. I'd also like to keep Len in this development program because he will continue to get better from it. I just hate the idea of taking on that much 20-21 salary when I'm confident there are other options. Maybe keep that option in the back pocket, but with 6 picks and only wanting to keep 3 of them, the options are endless already.

I'll also openly admit, however, that I'm not going to be upset with just about any move that TS makes right now. He's playing 3D chess and everyone else seems to be playing checkers. I think he will continue to put us in the best spots to rebuild into a real contender. If he pulled this move, I would have to believe its the right move.
