Mack is gone and now Teague is gone. Patterson likes to play PG time to time, but i don't think that is a good idea for the whole season.

Who should the Hawks get as the backup PG next year?

Lin would be perfect, but he is way too expensive so no chance the Hawks get him.

I noticed that Budz likes PGs who can attack the basket (Teague, Schroeder, Parker, Monte Ellis). Looking at the free agent PGs, the only two guys who are good at attacking the basket, who could come in cheap would be Brandon Jennings and Ty Lawson. Can Budz resurrect either of their careers?

Raymond Felton is another guy that would play well for the Hawks, but i think he will still get a sizable contract that makes him too expensive for the Hawks.

Gary Neal is the other guy. He is not flashy, but he is a safe pick who already knows Budz and the system.

I would lean toward Neal/Draft pick/etc

I want a vet with a steady hand and playoff experience. Dennis will have some serious growing pains.

A Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson type player could serve as a nice counterpoint to the German sparkplug. But My #1 choice is Shaun Livingston. Though, that is likely a pipe dream.

One wild-card suggestion: point forward, backup swingman, jack of all trades Evan Turner. He's not a shooter or scorer, but he is a solid facilitator who could cause matchup problems coming off the bench.

It's still TBD.

Neal does not attack the basket. He'll be 32 years He's not a very good PG running an offense.

We just lost depth at the 1 so it will need to be addressed this off-season. I prefer a guy that's a 1/2 guard that can hit 3's at a high rate.

We will have to sign a veteran PG. Dennis is too young and raw so the Hawks are probably looking at a steady, low turn over type of PG to back him up.

Not sure what HOU is looking for. (Cap space? Youth? Future draft picks?)

But #21 for Beverly seems a fair place to start negotiations.

People do remember the Hawks traded for Kirk Hinrich, correct? Vet PG, big guard that could even potentially play in lineups with Dennis, right?

I did forget about Kirk, but he's a perfect 3rd PG.

Ish Smith comes to mind, or Aaron Brooks probably fit the drive/dish style the best.

Jarrett Jack would indeed be a solid backup PG. No star, but a solid defender and has played in the league long enough to know the tricks of the game.

Is he a Bud type player? (Cerebral, unselfish, good shooter?)

My thinking is that you don't want a PG good enough that could potentially usurp Dennis when he likely goes through his erratic streaks so an older guy that can't realistically play over 20 minutes on average is ideal. The Hawks made their bed with him and, sink or swim, need to take their lumps in the attempt to see if he fully realizes his potential. Having guys like Jack will be too tempting for Bud to play over Dennis during his cold streaks in order to secure wins.


Of course, in the back of my head I kind of envision a resigned Al and Mike Conley being brought in as a dark horse making Dennis the backup again. Imagine that.

Is it really anymore grim than when Dennis (Rookie) and Mack (3rd year 23 years) were Teague's backup in year 1 of Coach Bud?
