Updated remaining free agents

Post#1 » by td00 » Sun Jul 3, 2016 2:31 am

There is still some very good pieces out there to improve our starting lineup.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/the-vertical-s-top-100-free-agents-204857680.html

What 2 names do you like?

I like: Crabbe @ 27, and Rondo @ 25...that is a veteran roster influx that could make an impact.

We have to have an alternative plan to DS if it goes south.

We have less than $4 mil in cap space. How could we afford any big names?

I'll take low price guys since we have very little cap space.
Combo guys that can shoot the 3 at a high percentage and play defense.
Or, the type of guy that just wants to prove himself on a one year deal, with intentions on getting paid during next years free agency.

Hawks should sign J.R. Smith, even over pay him alittle. He can play SF and he is a good shooter, but most importantly it will weaken the Cavs alittle bit

I'm starting to favor Deron Williams over Rondo if the price is good. Deron is a better shooter and Budz like to have a 2 PG line up from time to time and Deron can play some minutes at SG like Teague did.

Hawks need to resign Kris Humphries, he was just too good last year.

I would still try to trade Splitter for a 2nd round pick and maybe see if we could sign Zaza for less than 10 million a year.

I think he'll stay with CLE especially since LeBron is staying to defend his title. JR probably going to get 17 mil a year.

Deron can't stay healthy and Dallas will probably pay him a big figure to stay.

He was nice.

Maybe Philly takes him so it could help them reach the salary floor.

I think Zaza will be a starter somewhere.

I'd release Scott, dump Splitter for a 2nd. Get Terrence Jones and resign Hump. Make Tavares the 3rd big.

All the Cleveland guys are leaving, the don't care about defending a title. JR reluctantly took a pay cut last year. He is going to look to get paid now. He is already 31yr, this will be his last big contract before he starts to decline.

If Cleveland can find 17 million to pay him, he should take it, but Cleveland doesn't have that type of cash for Smith.

JR didn't take a paycut, he opted out to make more money and didn't have a market so he had to settle for Cleveland's offer. It appears that he's facing the same issue again.

This statement even adds more evidence to my logic that Smith will be looking for a big pay day this summer.

Well that is the statement you should have paid attention to. Almost 20 wings have already secured deals or are negotiating with teams, JR is not one of them. The biggest news on him from the start of free agency is that he's selling t-shirts. He may be looking for a big deal again, but again if teams aren't looking to give him one he's unlikely to secure one. Cleveland could give him a max if they wanted to, they have full Bird rights on him, but they won't because no one else will offer him anywhere close to that. Like last summer he's likely to settle on a small deal, desire < market.

I'm not talking about desire, i'm talking about what is feasible and what the Hawks should do. It doesn't matter if 30 teams want to give you a big contract or a few, because it ONLY TAKES ONE TEAM to offer you a big contract.

Sad to see that not only we are not able to attract but we cannot retain all-star caliber players.
Overall, we lost DMC, JT, Al and have drafted so-so. Yes Scott, Moose, Shroeder were good where picked but in return of the players above getting THJ, D12 and #12 this year appears a bit disappointing .
Regarding filling up the roster, I would go conservative and fairly cheap with Kris Humphries and Ramon Session while building flexibility for future moves.

CLE and Richard Jefferson were very fortunate to join up because he did some very good things for them. Same for Channing Frye.

Those are the kind of guys to elevate your team.

When Howard made it to the Finals, who was their key player that stepped up for that to happen? I remember, but also remember the guy who came back from injury and upset the chemistry that team developed.

Point is, there are probably a couple of unclaimed guys that will make an impact in next year's playoffs.

Humphries is a favorite of mine as well, and a vet PG is crucial. Perhaps his tag is going to be too steep after accepting Moose back.

Losing Al for nothing really didn't help us from an overall talent base. I have not seen Sessions do much for any team that has employed him.

Losing Al for nothing does hurt, but if you think about it another way, the Hawks just basically traded Horford for Dwight straight up (Dwight is on a better contract and 1 year younger)

Dwight, Horford, and Millsap would have been great and a big leap in talent, but a slight up grade of Dwight over Horford is not so horrible, its just a slight little hop in talent.

100% agree.

And it seems more likely than not Millsap leaves next summer as well. Our entire lineup from that magical 2015 season will likely be gone two years later...with only Taurean Prince to show in return.
