Delany was always the backup.
Jack is not ready to play, so he could not be the backup.

Not an option if you're not ready to play.
This is league has quickly become one that cannot wait for former productive players to be healthy unless they're currently under contract for multiple years.

I am disappointed for J Jack, and skeptical that Delany and Dennis are ready to run a veteran, playoff team on their own--I suspect Jack will still have opportunities to catch on with a team once he fully recovers from his injury. Heck, since he knows the basics of our offense from training camp...I still think we might revisit with him mid season.
Did Will Bynum just become our third PG?

I will say that I was floored by this move -- did not see it coming at all.

I'm not surprised.
Splitter's injury and his unreliability, Millsap missing time, Scott's legal situation (something was supposed to be happening in the fall)\, Dwight getting into foul trouble means we need the bigs we have.
Behind Dennis and Delaney, I think emergency PG minutes goes to Baze, THJr and Bembry meaning Bynum will not make the team.

Being a GT fan, I was hopefully to see him in Hawks uniform. Oh well..maybe he will get picked up mid season when his injury is healed

1) Thanks for the heads up. I had not seen this.
2)
I, for years, wanted a veteran PG to split duties and mentor Dennis. Now we have a rookie backing him up. <sigh>
We're, what 10 months removed from Budenholzer benching Dennis multiple games for his erratic, reckless play?
I never thought I'd miss having Shelvin Mack as our backup PG.

Very confused looking at their roster (16) about what they're going to do about PG position heading into the season...Talent wise it looks like they have to cut this Josh Maggette guy to make it 15 on roster but that would leave them with only 1 guy who can truly run point. I know Delaney is a combo guard who can play point but he is a 27 year old rookie who has been overseas for last 5 or so years... even then that leaves them with 2 guys who can play point.. they got to have something in mind right? Maybe waive Tavares or Tiago? Are they eyeing a FA? Trade? What are your thoughts?

Tiago is injured for a few weeks. Mike Scott has a legal issue hanging over his head, so I don't think any of the bigs are moved at this time. I think the Hawks will start the season with Shroeder and Delaney as PGs (how many teams play 3 PGs significant minutes? none). Bazemore, THjr will be the emergency PG in a pinch. As the season progresses, trades are always an option. Muscala has an unguaranteed contract (until January)

Bud does not view Delaney as a typical rookie.

Yes...we've been over this.
Jamaaliver wrote:Here is Bud's assessment:
Coach Budenholzer wrote:Malcolm Delaney - He is a rookie who has played in the Euroleague final four. He’s played at the highest level in Europe and been one of the top guards over there. It’s almost not fair to call him a rookie. His demeanor and his understanding of the game, we feel really good about his addition. We have so much respect for European basketball. What he has done over there, to add that to our team, we are very hopeful he is somebody who is going to help us.
HereI think MD is gonna turn out to be a diamond in the rough type of acquisition. Kudos to the much maligned scouting department.
HereYou don't have to defend every single decision they make, dude. Time will tell if a guy with 0 NBA experience is a proper complement for a first time starter...

The suddenly rudderless ATL All day speculates we could see Bembry get minutes at PG.
DeAndre’ Bembry
Bembry was the 21st selection of the Atlanta Hawks in June’s NBA Draft. He was drafted as a forward, but he has a reputation as an excellent passer. During his career at St. John’s, Bembry averaged 3.6 assists per game, with a career best 4.5 assists per contest in his senior season.
Like Bembry, Delaney has had some good moments in exhibition games. In what would roughly equate to back up minutes, he has put up 7.2 points and 2.6 assists per game so far in a Hawks uniform. He also does a good job of taking care of the ball, averaging less than one turnover per game. This could work in Delaney’s favor, as ball security is crucial for a backup point guard.
HereThis seems unlikely this soon. But I wouldn't be surprised if Bembry does backup the PG in the future.

RealGM Wiretap wrote:The Cleveland Cavaliers are attempting to trade away Mo Williams or face a luxury tax hit as they've been unable to agree upon a buyout.
Williams is owed $2.2 million for this season and he did not report to training camp. Williams spent much of the offseason trying to decide if he would retire and ultimately underwent surgery on Oct. 12th.
HereUs trading for Mo Williams right now seems unlikely. But he could be a solid target later in the season (whether as a Free Agent or in Trade).
Should a veteran performer become necessary.

GM Wes Wilcox provides some clarity on this decision:
C-Viv: Regarding the point-guard situation, you are only carrying two on the roster after releasing Jarrett Jack. I know the organization has preferred to carry three point guards in the past. Are you comfortable with just Dennis Schroder and Malcolm Delaney at the position?
Wes Wilcox: Certainly not how we intended this to play out. Jarrett’s a true professional. This time of year it’s always difficult because you are telling guys who have worked extremely hard and committed a great deal of time that they are not going to be on your team. Though they are all difficult, this one was especially difficult for us because of the respect we have for Jarrett, his representatives. But this was really about a couple of things. One, we’ve been very pleased with the play of Malcolm Delaney. In addition to that, we’ve just had an unusual … preseason with some of our (front-line) guys missing some games and Tiago (Splitter) not quite being ready. We had to make the very difficult decision to keep more front-line help versus the point-guard depth. Certainly, it’s a tough decision but one we felt we had to make.

Coach Bud on entering the season with only two PGs:
In an emergency, Budenholzer suggested that wings Kent Bazemore, Thabo Sefolosha, Tim Hardaway Jr. and DeAndre Bembry could bring the ball up court in the offensive system.
“With (Bazemore) and the way we play in our motion, we are not as point guard dependent,” Budenholzer said. “All of our wings, even Thabo, DeAndre and even Tim. We’ve used Tim in more pick-and-rolls last (exhibition) game. We’ll just keep an eye on how best to manage the 15 guys.”
