So much for that idea

The Atlanta Hawks have released center Edy Tavares and plan to sign forward Ryan Kelly, league sources tell The Vertical.

This franchise and Centers-----> :nonono:

Peach Tree Hoops foresaw this weeks ago, so I guess it was somewhat inevitable.

And I hope he can get a chance to catch on elsewhere.

But it burns we literally only gave him one year to show improvement before tossing him aside.

Lame, at least Edy actually played in games. Wish we could drop Splitter instead. Can't say I have ever seen him do literally anything at this point.

Mike Scott will be out 4 weeks with knee non-surgical knee procedure. Ryan Kelly to be resigned.

The 43rd overall pick in the 2014 draft, Tavares joined the Hawks last season, appearing in just 11 games and averaging 6.6 minutes per contest. The 24-year-old Cape Verde native also made 29 D-League appearances, averaging 9.2 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 3.3 BPG in 21.6 minutes per game. While Tavares is viewed as a raw prospect with potential, the Hawks have apparently decided his roster spot can be better used on a more seasoned player.

Kelly, 25, was waived by the Hawks earlier this month. After averaging 22.9 minutes per contest during his first two years in Los Angeles, Kelly saw his playing time reduced last season, as he played just 13.1 MPG in 36 contests. He averaged 4.2 PPG and 3.4 RPG in those games, shooting just 36.9% from the floor, 13.5% from beyond the arc, and 68.5% from the line.

As for Tavares, his $1MM salary for 2016/17 was fully guaranteed, so the Hawks will have to pay it unless he’s claimed on waivers later this week. The club won’t be on the hook for his 2017/18 salary worth $1.015MM, since it was non-guaranteed.

...the Hawks will become the first team in 2016/17 to actually replace one player with another on their regular-season roster.

Edy Tavares is close to a deal to sign with Raptors 905.

Tavares was released by the Atlanta Hawks shortly after the start of the season.

Tavares is a 7'3 center who was an early second round pick in 2014. Tavares has a career PER of 14.3.

I honestly don't know what the Hawks didn't see in him. He already had a better jump hook then Howard and you can't teach size. His biggest problem was fouling, which would have gotten better with more playing time.

Sources: Cavaliers sign center Edy Tavares for playoff run

...the Cavs plan to sign center Edy Tavares, sources said. He blocked 11 shots in two playoff games against the Cavs' D-League team over the weekend. He has spent the entire season playing for the Toronto Raptors' D-League team after being waived by the Atlanta Hawks last fall.
ESPN

The Cavaliers continue their quest to find an effective rim protector

There aren’t many players bigger than the 7-foot-3 Tavares, who sports an 8-foot wingspan. Playing in the D-League with Raptors 905 this season, Tavares has been impressive, putting up 10.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and -- most important from the Cavs’ perspective -- 2.7 blocks per night...

It’s hard to imagine Tavares getting many minutes in the postseason

Tavares, member of the Cavaliers playoff team, was named D League player of the year. His stock has risen steadily since being waived by The Hawks.

Looking at Hawks past mistakes really hurts.....especially with our asset situation.

The new GM will have their work cut out for them. Hawks have far to go to catch up talent-wize

Poor kid. Cavs signed hm to a multi year deal, but I suspect it isn't guaranteed. Hope he gets the chance to come back to that team next fall.

He's developed well and deserves a legit shot to be a backup in this league.

So ends the Hawks tenure of R. Kelly. (Again)

I can't fathom that this guy was the impetus for us trading a long-term prospect.

What a short-sighted series of decisions.
