Trade assets - current draft picks
AJC posted current draft picks for next 6 years. Nothing great, but if we drop out of competing, it would be more useful for the long term:
http://www.ajc.com/sports/basketball/complete-list-hawks-upcoming-draft-picks/fLKGKsWH5WZA9SosyGz8EL/
I personally think it will take 2 moves to seriously help us in this year's playoffs, but I don't expect much to happen. Teams out of contention have talent there for the taking.

Having all our own firsts and a couple from other teams are useful in trades.

In this (consensus) deep draft, that 2nd round Nets pick which will be pick 31 this year is like a first rounder in weaker drafts. I don't want to overlook it.

That...
is an excellent point. I hope the player selected there gets a legit shot to be a part of the roster.
Mike and Mike became important rotation pieces for us. But Lamar and Edy were both cast out pretty quickly into their NBA careers. For minor/short-term signings at that.
Waiving Edy Tavares to sign R Kelly for 8 weeks still boggles the mind.

The team need shooting at the backup PF spot with Mike Scott injured, didn't know what Moose would give (started off strong but has since tailed off) and Tiago Splitter was supposed to be back

So, basically, the team focused solely on the short term at the expense of any long term gain from Edy (or a future trade).
Sounds like the Budenholzer Front office.

<Sarcasm Font>Our season may have really fallen apart without Robert Kelly's 1.1 PPG. </Sarcasm Font>

Re: Trade assets - current draft picks
Happy that we have all of our picks and a few marginal other picks going forward. Not very good assets though. Our 2017 pick is projected at #20, CLEV first will likeley be late twenties, the minny pick is likely to end up being two seconds in 2020 something and the Nets second this year. Not so great.
When I look at the roster and next ofseason"s contract situation and think that our big move will either be to sign Sap to a huge deal or lose him. If we sign him we'll have like $86M tied into 7 players, two of them old starters. That leaves 6 players to sign/draft with about $15M.
That would give us
DH /
Sap /
Prince /
Baze / Bembry
Schro / Delaney
#20 and a couple of seconds and about $15M to spend (minus pick cost)
Let Sap walk, we get only cap space, but less cap than if we sign him; less value. So, take Sap out of the above roster and we have about $35M to spend. Not a cap expert, but I think that's about right.
How can the Hawks front-office let this happen when there is a better option? Is it worth it for one more 40 something win season?

Re: Trade assets - current draft picks
If you're seriously considering letting Sap walk, does it make sense to even have DH remain here?
Sap worth another 3 year deal as our ONLY current All-Star. It hasn't been that long ago that we had ZERO AS representation. I'm not for that at all.
With the picks we have, can't we treat #31 as good as a 1st rounder? To have guys who get drafted the next 2 years be solid contributors? I don't think that's realistic with DS, Prince & Bembry already on the payroll for the next 3-4 years. That's enough youth.
Time to go get some real talent, and use picks/Splitter $/THJ/Baze to get someone to help in this year's playoffs. I think we have enough inside talent. Only question I have is does Bud see THJ as a long term asset for this team or get as much as you can right now? Me, I don't think we'll get very much, so see what he does for us this playoff. 2 of our 1st should get us a solid contributor that will help us more than just this season.
I saw we had interest in PJ Tucker, and he could help us in the playoffs at the 3. DS needs help as well.

Just like with the Adrein Payne pick, if you realize quickly you've made a mistake you move on. Investing time and money in a failed experiment is futile. Trade?? Edy?? He has no trade value. He toils in the Dleague.

Re: Trade assets - current draft picks
Bud has been quoted as saying he's good with the current roster.
I totally disagree in that there is no way Bud is comfortable with our PG situation, or our results from the 2 or 3 slots.
Bud needs to be a buyer since he dumped Korver for leftovers.

Sounds like DRose is trying to be moved for anything.
Can we at least move the Splitter contract and a 2nd rounder?
DS still needs help down the stretch whether Rose comes back or not.

We have 3 2nd rounders in this upcoming draft which we most likely will not use all and keep on roster. Nets, Heat and our own.
I'm interested in definitely keeping the Nets 2nd.

I agree we need an improvement at backup PG.
But, I'm not crazy about bringing in D Rose. He's not exactly a solid locker room guy or adept at running a free-flowing offense.
Ironically, I'd be okay with bringing back either Shelvin Mack or Jarrett Jack.
I definitely agree that Splitter, Scott and some of those second rounders should be packaged for some type of value.

Re: Trade assets - current draft picks
Well, if we're taking on bad contracts or guys who can walk, we have some leverage on what we can offer to get a Rose, Rondo or DWade. I'm for stacking our bench instead of wasting pieces that aren't going to benefit us this year.
Our owner should see this as a current predicament and tell Bud to make it happen, whether it gives us a boost or not. Gotta take a shot at getting better for today, and after dumping Korver (IMO)

Re: Trade assets - current draft picks
On topic, I think it's fair to say the value of these picks in potential trades is...limited:
Which could be problematic moving forward. Cause we do NOT have the roster space for a ton of middling young players on this squad over the next three years.
