NBA Rookie Power Rankings

It's a great rookie class, and there have been some highs and lows so far in the young season

Image

10. John Collins Atlanta Hawks F

Stats: 10.9 pts, 7.3 reb, 0.9 blk

Collins is a 6-10 human Pogo stick whose per-36-minute numbers are second in the rookie class in scoring (20.2 points) and first in rebounding (13.5). He has gotten less than 20 minutes per game for the 1-7 Hawks, and that's largely due to his inability to play defense at the NBA level. He blocks shots, but we all know that's not necessarily a sign of good defense. Collins can certainly score and rebound, though, and he has been a nice surprise for the rebuilding Hawks early on.
CBS Sports

Top 10 is great, but this is lower than I would have guessed for their first ranking.

As the baseball player's commercial says, "I pretty good!"

Over the years, Hawks have messed up in the draft. Nice to know they got this one right!

This is more like it. Only 20 years old and among the best rebounders in the game. This bodes well for his long term prospects as a fixture in our team or as....potential trade fodder.

Team defense and shooting are the only major holes. And the shooting is improving.

Good to see. Weren't rebounding/motor among the concerns many had for him?

I think the concerns were defense, passing (said he had like 1 assist inhi college career - looks good to me.) and shooting from range since he played on the block in college.

Which past NBA old-timer said 'grab them rebounds, it'll make you an all-star? (or something like that).

:D

I wonder, if there was a vote of Hawk fans, asking this question: "Who is the most popular Hawk since Nique?" what
the answer would be.

Young as he is, and knowing how few games he has played, I'll bet John Collins would make the top ten!
What do you think? He sure has all of us stirred up like no one else lately.

I know. He has a lot to learn about playing in the NBA. It will take a while. He seems smart enough to
learn what he needs to know and the things he is not very good at, he will improve.

8-)

Sweet! I was half kidding originally about the dunks but watching so many of JC's soft layups roll off the rim I stand by my decree. Dunk everything!

You can see JC improve every game. Even games where he doesn't show big stats you can see him getting more comfortable and stronger defensively. Glad he's getting big minutes. I hope it continues when Ersan and Moose come back.

The thing I love about him is the effort on the glass, specially the offensive glass. Guys are used to lazing around on the boards and when Collins is going 110%...you gonna work. I love what I'm seeing. He's also light and thin but strong. He's not a Marvin Williams 2006 infant strength that's for damn sure.

A growing sentiment around the league is that he should be getting the bulk of the PT:

NBA Head Coaches: Play These Guys More Minutes!

John Collins, PF/C, Atlanta Hawks

...the Hawks nabbed one of the most productive first-year players in No. 18 pick John Collins. His 18.6 player efficiency rating ranks second among rookies with 100-plus minutes played.

"He's been making a really positive first impression," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters in October. "Some really positive first steps. After three or four months, we're real pleased with how he works, how he wants to be good. I think he's kind of reaping the benefits of his approach."

the fact the Hawks aren't chasing a playoff berth, and Collins' 20.9 minutes average (15th among rookies, eighth on Atlanta) makes no sense.

Dedmon, Ilyasova (24.3), Muscala (22.4) and Babbitt (20.0) have each eaten into the developmental minutes Collins could be receiving -- and all could be gone after this season.

Collins' time in Atlanta is coming. [H]e's clearly ready for more than he's being given—the Hawks fare 13.5 points better per 100 possessions with him on the floor—they shouldn't risk delaying his ascent.

I think that sentiment is from people who aren't watching the games. Collins' per36 personal fouls is 6.6. Ersan has only played in the first 4 games so he's not taking anyone's minutes. With Ersan, Moose, and plumlee out Collins is the only real big we have beside Dedmon so you can't have him foul out in the 3rd quarter.
