Hawks sign Dewayne Dedmon

Post#1 » by Hawkeyes » Wed Jul 12, 2017 2:05 am

@ShamsCharania
Spurs free agent Dewayne Dedmon has agreed to a deal with the Atlanta Hawks, league sources tell The Vertical.

Good pick up. Nice defensive big that should do well with added PT.

Why pay $7M to a dead mon?

I'm living in a world I don't understand.

I like the signing. Good gap stop center for a couple of years. This dude plays hard. I honestly don't think we will get a top 5 pick next year. We are too good.

Hawks sign Dewayne Dedmon

Post#6 » by ATL Boy » Wed Jul 12, 2017 6:41 am

He's inserted as our starting C right away. Knows the system, is a hard worker, will protect the rim.

1-year deal with a player option, this is one of those signings that I wish was for longer than just one year (although I guess he wants to hit the market again next year).

O.K. Hawk fans, here is a great quiz for all you tank commanders. (Others can answer too!)
Looking at last season's roster VS the upcoming season's roster, as it stands right now:
Believing that Dewayne Dedmon will be our starting center, D8 is a far superior center because - - - - - - - - .
Our former all star PF, Millsap will now be replaced by rookie John Collins. This will cost us ------------
games next season.
TH Jr is gone and Prince/Bremby will become #1, #2 as his replacement. This is bad because -----------------.
Dorsey will now be one of our back up PG players. Because of this, we lose -------------.

Because of the strength, or lack of, in the east, this hawk team will find it impossible to make
the playoffs this upcoming season because --------------..
Remember, Hawks still have some $$$ under the payroll limit that they may yet use.

This is by no means a "great" quiz. More confusingly a terrible one. With every question comes your opinion and your answer, basically.

Does anyone else find it ironic that for a decade we were unable to find a decent defensive Center to pair next to Horford?

But we managed to pull two to protect John Collins in a matter of weeks?

Kudos to Travis.

When I saw some of the Spurs games on league pass or National TV last year, this guy would always come in at garbage time and play very energetic no matter the score. I remember him from that little synopsis in my mind, it's a nice pickup, I like him.

Q1. What if someone disagrees with D* being "a far superior center" than Dedmon?
Q2. I get what you are saying. But generally speaking, can we realistically claim that the loss of a single player will negatively affect a team's record? For example, remember whne the Raptors traded Gay away for a bunch of lesser talent, yet became much better after his departure? I am not saying that this will happen to the Hawks now that Millsap is gone. But the question is flawed. This is a team effort, and the roster has seen many other changes. Young players progressing. Etc.
Q3. See Q1 and Q2.
Q4. Clearly, you are not fond of having Dorsey on the roster. Don't worry, he should spend most his time in the G-League this season.
Q5. Same as Q1. Perhaps some of us think that the Hawks can still amke the playoffs. I don't, but I don't think that it's "impossible". Remember: this is the East. Top-3 heavy and that's it.

I like this signing. I see shadows of lob city east with Dennis, Collins, and Dedmon
If it counts luck is worth the same as skill

I'll play:
...D8 is a superior rebounder and shot blocker, but Dedmond might be a better team and PnR defender, and a better player on the PnR on offense as well

...it will cost us game since he as young players still learning. Collins may be able to match the point production but it's the other intangibles that Millsap brought will be missed.

...THjr is a known scorer, Bembry is a better defender - good defense leading to easy offense - from what I 've seem from Bembry in SL - his offense at the basket, in the paint comes easy to him. midrange and long distance shooting is still the question.

...I think Dorsey will spend a lot of time in the DLeage. Delaney is the still the backup.

Indeed. Dedmon has been great:

Mike Cunningham wrote:Hawks center Dewayne Dedmon has quietly become the team’s most consistent player. He seems to be playing with extra bounce lately and has shown a little swagger at times, something that doesn’t seem to come naturally for the big man. Dedmon keeps taking and making jumpers, too. He might end up being the team’s best trade piece, though his player option for next season might shrink the market somewhat.

Dedmon dominated the Kings in the first half with 18 points (8-for-9 field goals), 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. The Kings had 35 points, 14 field goals, 19 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Did I mention the Kings are terrible?

I wonder if he is literally auditioning for other teams right now. For both December (when he can be traded) and for next summer.

If it gets the Celtics closer to beating both CLE and GSW, I'd be willing to move him to BOS for Marcus Smart and their own first rounder in 2018.

28 year old big man. I guess we have to trade him because someone will probably pay him this summer but I could see him fitting in our timeline.

Barring injury, I definitely foresee him opting out this summer for a longer term deal with more guaranteed money. And good for him.

The question becomes: how can we facilitate this so we can also benefit?

Questions:
1. Which teams have the money to sign him - not many? Would he go to a team like the Suns or Kings for a big payday? Would he start for them. He's excelling in Bud's system, would he do as well somewhere else.
2.Going to a contender - Most of the contenders may only have the mil-level exception to give him. It's currently projected at $8.8 million, 2 million more than what he is making currently. On most contenders he won't be the starter, he's starting here and excelling - does he trade that for a chance at a ring?

I'd only trade him for something worth while to help our rebuild. If he opts out and he wants to be back at a reasonable deal, I take no issue with that, if he opts out and leaves, we can rent the capspace to get 1 1st round pick ala J.Craw.
I have no interest in helping Boston knock off the Cavs, not interested in Smart, he's a RFA and him and Boston already couldn't agree on an extension since Boston is already in the tax.

:D

At 28, Dedmon is young enough to be the Atlanta Hawks starting center for several years. Collins, the #2 center currently, is more a PF than center. If we trade - give away our center, who will we replace him with?

Trade him for a mid, first round pick? And pick who? Would this pick be a superior center than Dedmon? -

East leading Celtics entertained the west's leading Warriors last night. As the two team's faced off, we noticed that
the opposing centers were both ex Hawks! We have another good center. I don't want to lose him.

Plumlee is in G League right now, getting in shape to play in the NBA. How good is he? Who knows? Someone
thought he was pretty good at one time. For proof, look at his current contract. We know now that Dedmon
fits Bud's style and we have no idea about Plumlee.

Before we jump in and make changes, suppose we wait until Plumlee returns from G League and see what we have.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
