2017-18 Dennis Schroder 20ppg and All Star?

Post#1 » by atlantabbq99 » Sun Jul 23, 2017 9:09 am

Millsap is gone, and no Dwight and Hardaway. Dennis now becomes the clear cut #1 option for the Hawks on every play.

I'm not say that Dennis won't struggle, but his volume will go up.

With the extra touches, does Dennis become a 20ppg scorer and make his first all star appearance?

Dennis as a 20 ppg scorer - sure. It's almost a certainty.

Dennis as an All Star this season? Too early to tell. Especially if we have a losing record for most of the season.

The East is still loaded with guards, especially point guards. Kyrie, IT, Lowry, Wall, Kemba.

I see Dennis as a 19/8/3 guy for the season. He could make a run at the all star game but too many big pg names ahead of him and the all star game is usually a popularity contest, not only for the fans vote but coaches also tend to vote for the popular names. I think Dennis is a top 5 pg in the east but I doubt he makes the all star game this year.

I think he'll make a run at it for sure. It would be awesome if Dennis could make an Isaiah Thomas-like quantum leap this year but that might be asking too much of him. Replacing Dwight and putting some shooters around him will make things much easier for Dennis this year.

This is suddenly not nearly as unlikely as it seemed a few months back...

Dennis is currently #6 in efficiency among PGs.
48% FG - 38% 3FG - 90% FT

Wall and Irving are locks, Dennis will be battling Walker for that last All Star spot.

NBA All-Star Game 2018: Projecting starters, reserves in competitive Eastern Conference race

The 2018 NBA All-Star Game is still a little more than two months away, but already, players have been making their cases for inclusion on the revamped roster system.

we are looking to determine which seven players will fill out the reserves:

Dennis Schroder, Hawks

Roster category: Guard

The case for: Averaging 20 points and 7 assists is usually enough to warrant an All-Star spot, and the last player to put up those numbers without a berth was Baron Davis in 2008. Schroder is close at 19.7 points and 6.8 assists. He is shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 87.3 percent from the free-throw line, both career-highs.

The case against: The Hawks are just too bad a team to justify Schroder as an All-Star, and the competition for the East roster will be too stiff.

Chances: Very slim. No way he gets ahead of Lowry, Walker and Oladipo.

Is it bad that I don't want Dennis in the all star game this year?

 nope.
What I don't like as the argument as to why he doesn't get in is because the Hawks are bad - how many of those writers were pushing for Embiid last year who didn't play in half the games and on a bad Sixers team.

Why not? We've seen reserves such as Joe make it from a bad team and Al as the one guy willing to cancel a trip to the Bahamas at the last minute, why not lil Goldie? Helps the trade value.

He is having career highs almost across the board...and we do have him locked up for a bit..why not get into the popularity contest.

Yea, I don't understand why y'all wouldn't want him to make it to the AS game? What would it hurt? Seems like it would just help trade value if that is needed or desired. Still think it's very unlikely because of who he is up against, but he has been looking pretty good this season.

some pro-Dennis propaganda:

The continued progression of Dennis Schroder is having a significant impact on the Atlanta Hawks.

The 20.2 points and 6.5 assists per game that Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder is averaging don’t properly signify just how much of an impact he is having on the team. The 24-year-old guard out of Germany is posting the highest averages in minutes, points and assists on the Hawks roster, effectively carrying an offense that is completely reliant on him.

The passing and shooting of Schroder has accounted for 34.5 percent of the total field goal attempts made by Atlanta, and he has missed two contests.

Schroder is one of just four players, along with Paul George, Klay Thompson and C.J. McCollum, to average over 20 points a night while attempting fewer than four free throws a game. Each night, Schroder is slashing to the rim 19.1 times per game, the highest figure in the NBA this year, leading to 10.9 points a night on 51.7 percent shooting.

From nearly everywhere on the court, Schroder has emerged as an efficient shooter, connecting on career-highs of 46.2 percent from the field and 87 percent at the foul line. Part of the uptick in scoring productivity from Schroder has been the dramatic shooting percentage between 10-16 feet away from the rim. This season, Schroder has knocked down 58 percent of his attempts from that range, up from 39.2 a year ago.

Head coach Mike Budenhozler has managed to transform Dennis Schroder into a legitimate offensive facilitator this year. Schroder ranks third in total passes per game, dishing out 65.3 passes each night, leading to 6.5 assists a game, the 11th highest total in the league.

Dennis gets singled out by an opposing coach for his improved play. If he were to make a run at an All Star spot, it'd likely be the coach's who put him in:

The Hawks have beaten Cleveland three of the last four games dating to last season, and Lue said Schroder is a major reason why.

"I think Schroder, he's improved his jump shot, he's shooting the three a lot better, the pull-up jumper a lot better so you can't really go under as much because he can make that shot," Lue said. "His speed and quickness, you try to switch one through four and it's a mismatch. With the fives you try to blitz and they've got guys rolling to the basket that will finish at the rim.

"Then they've got shooters all around him, (Kent) Bazemore and (Luke) Babbit, those guys can make shots but also put the ball on the floor. When you have four or five guys on the floor that can shoot but also put the ball on the floor, it makes it tough."

Dennis' offense has improved. He has an automatic baseline midrange jumper, he's hitting at a decent clip off the PnR from midrange, his 3pt % is up.
Areas of improvement on offense:
1. Untimely 3 pt shots early in the shot clock.
2. Know your opponent on the switch, he can't always get by the big long guy
3. Passing in his drive and kick scenario - he's gotten better as the season has gone along

His biggest improvement has to come defensively. I've seen some just out and out lazy stuff, but you know what? I'm not gonna rag him too much. The ENTIRE offense falls to him, until some of that burden lessens, this is what it'll be.
What I don't want is for him to pick up bad defensive habits.

First, this is TLue we're talking about and sometimes Dennis seems to model his game after him. And's that's not a complement.

Second, Dennis always shows up for Cleveland and Boston. It's the Magic, Knicks, Charlotte games where he seems disinterested.
