Rebuild reality and doin it right

Post#1 » by tbhawksfan1 » Thu Jan 11, 2018 9:36 pm

The rebuild is underway and the hawks are sitting pretty for the top pick. A few young Hawks are showing good signs of improvement and potential (Collins, Schro, Prince). Three players should be used to get more trade assets (Dedmon, Belli, Illya).

Hawks absolutely need to max this draft. The rebuild is going to take it's time. Two seasons of top pick range, a third mid to late lottery, then things should start moving up. The key is to max the talent acquistion and development during these three seasons.

There is no good way to accelerate this. Even when we had 60 wins, an ECF, Horf, Sap we couldn't sign anyone. No top player will be signing with the Hawks in at least the next couple years.

Max this draft and next, acquiring enough talent to develop to have a legit chance for the team to grow into a true contender with FA additions. It will be four years before we're at this point. It takes time.

Questions is; are the Hawks going to assemble the draft assets and delelop the talent to turn this three year rebuild into a contender?

We could be a playoff team next year. This team isn't as bad as the record shows, and a lottery pick + FA/trade acquisition would make us a much better team.

That's what i think too which begs the question: if we return to the playoffs next year will it kill our chances of actually building a contender? A lot depends on this draft of course.

Hawks will be a lot closer to a top pick than the playoffs next season

Dedmon will either be traded or opt out. The only other signifigant players will be Schro, Prince, Collins, Baze?, rookies and maybe a developmental FA.

Hawks and PO hope should be moved back to about 2020. But if the rebuild is done right, could be the beginning of a big, long upward climb all the way to the top

Depends on how good the pick is. If we draft a future superstar, then we'll be in great shape with just one lottery pick. If the guy we end up with is maybe all-star level and nothing more, we will still need to make more moves to become a great team. But that confidence comes from my belief in Bud's coaching ability.

Dedmon can be resigned, and we have money to go after free agents, maybe just not the cream of the crop. If we attach picks, even Plumlee might be a moveable contract in the summer for another team that wants to tank. The Lakers have players they're trying to move, and we do have veterans right now other teams want. Add the 3 first rounders we have and that's potentially a good, young team we can field next year with the potential to become a whole lot better.

It's imperative we get this pick right to start the actual rebuild next season. This year is the tear down.
I don't think we'll be players in the high end FA market.
I don't want us to use our capspace this offseason on your run of the mill guys on long contracts (like Will Barton for example), rather sell the capspace to take on short term salary for 1st round picks.
Ideally, I would love to have another lottery pick in 2018. Combine the Minny pick and Bembry (and I love everything about his game except his inability to shoot and now stay healthy) to move up.

I highly doubt we'll return to the playoffs next season. This is not being negative, but being a realist, so I don't see it happening so quickly.
I am excited about the draft and the thought of having the first overall pick so we can select one of the big men for our frontcourt to play with John Collins for many years. I believe that combination will translate into many years of winning seasons, as long as we continue to rebuild, and develop our young talent.

Hawks have two to three year window to use cap space to optimize the rebuild. Cap space is useless to a bottom dwelling team; should be used, but not to hope for a star that will not sign, but to absorb other teams mistakes for the payoff of picks

Holding on to positive short-term players is counter-productive to the priorities of the rebuild; acquiring and developping young talent mostly through the draft

Hawks really need to start moving expiring vets: Dedmon / Beli / Illya. ORL is only about a half game from claiming last spot and Collins only gets 15 mts (10 BOARDS) while PLumlee, Illya, Dedmon and Moose get minutes. None of whom will be around when the next competitive Hawks team sees the court.

Baze has played to where his contract can be moved
Dedmon is an opt-out and has real trade value (first)
Illya / Beli are useless 'negative) to the rebuild unless they were signed to flip

The Hawks hedged on rebuilding even when it was evident a rebuild was unavoidable and hit the wall. No more hedging. Do it right

Next offseason needs to be a repeat of last one. Bring in 2/3 vets on one year deal to swing before the deadline.

You want a fast rebuild, you can do it like CLEV and bring in LJ and accompanying stars or you can max two drafts, then add keepers.

Two good top picks, some mid-first role players from these two drafts, then develop and grow.

Got to give the rebuild time

How good is the current core; Schro, Prince, Collins? Only players I'm willing to see as core.

Schro: mercurial starting PG. Best current player. Young good contract. Presently NBA average starter with more up-side. Question is; will he grow and complement teams bottoming and re-growth?

Prince: we like him. Not NBA average yet, but could reach that mark. Can he surpass it?

Collins: we like him but he seems more like an energy role player type for now. A lot of development needed to see him as an average starter.

This team really needs to use the next two drafts to put some HIGH potential on the team. For the moment the best we have is Schro and many are ready to ship him.

Schro , Prince, Collins, Dorsey and Bembry should be the only players remaining by trade deadline two seasons from now.

Plumlee is going to play himself into a moveable deal by then..... one of my reach hopes for the rebuild. Maybe not so reach as some of my reach wants have already happened... Baze is becoming moveable, Beli, Illya and Dedmon have solidified their trade value and the young guys are developping nicely.

Keep Dedmon to mentor Ayton/Collins.

Didn't mention no trade list... don't have one. Schro, Collins and Prince are my present keepers though. Just saying that no one else matters for the Hawks future, except as trade value. This rebuild is going to bring in a lot of talented young players during the next two drafts.

So, trade deadline is past and Hawks got nothing from it. Last summers signings have only contributed to counter-productive wins. What good are they now? Should we cheer Dedmon going off or Beli hitting a big shot. Should we be happy if Beli is bought out?

The ONLY goal this season was to acquire future assets and develop youth. Solid F for the first part.

Schlenk needs to realise that Collins and Prince are not stars and get one. That means a top pick. If he screws it up, it will mean ten more years with a peak at mediocrity.

Rebuild reality and doin it right

Post#19 » by Jamaaliver » Sun Feb 11, 2018 4:48 am

Read on Twitter

...the Atlanta Hawks are clearly focusing on adding a significant piece to its roster through the draft this summer, as the team not only needs to land a franchise cornerstone, but someone to draw fans to Philips Arena.

Help could be on the way, as the class of 2018 offers some very tantalizing prospects, including Luka Doncic, DeAndre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, Michael Porter Jr. and Trae Young.

If the regular season ended today, the Hawks not only would have a 25 percent chance of landing the first overall selection in June’s draft, but the team would also have the rights to the first round draft choices of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Houston Rockets.

Disagree somewhat on the contributing to wins part. Dedmon and Ilyasova did, but Plumlee and Belinelli contributed more to losses than they did to wins.
