Biggest Hawks’ question: Is Budenholzer coming back?
As the Hawks head into the offseason and the focus shifts to the obvious topics -- lucky ping-pong balls, potential draft picks and whether Dennis Schroder can make it through the summer without handcuffs – there’s one subject that has the potential to dwarf all others: Is Mike Budenholzer coming back?
This isn’t about whether the Hawks should bring Budenholzer back as coach. They should. That’s not even up for debate. He’s one of the game’s better coaches, and he’s under contract. Critics have a tendency to harp on him constantly screaming at players – as if that should suddenly be verboten for a coach – but he develops players and maximizes their talent.

If the Hawks plan to take a long time to make the decision and if the decision ends up being to let him go then many of the top coaching candidates could be gone by then.

I think there's no way they let him go this summer. The question is will he want to interview for the Bucks (or any other) jobs if they ask. The longer we don't hear anything the better.

Guys, don't get too caught up on PHX as the only or primary destination for Budenholzer.
He'll be coveted by a few locations.
The interest by MIL is real.

No doubt. Top 5 coaches don't come available every day. This is typical Atlanta BS.

Resseller certinaly has been exposed as inexperienced owner. Should have just left bud as POBO and tasked him with finding a GM.

WHAT?!?
This is...oh, my.
That's not how you build a company. You don't task middle management with hiring their own CEO.
Especially since Budenholzer ignored the advice of the last GM to the detriment of everyone.

This is how rebuilds are accomplished. You knockdown what rickety structure was already there and then start building from the ground up.
We haven't even finished the first year of the rebuild. if you guys are gonna survive this thing...you need to prepare yourselves.

Getting rid of Bud is purely an ego move on Travis' part.

You don't throw out the baby with the bath-water. As bad as things are for the Hawks after much ineptitude losing Bud makes it worse. Solid compensation better come back or it will be another big step back. We don't need anymore of those

So far Travis hasn't gotten compensation back for anything so I don't expect much to be coming our way.

But Budenholzer hasn't been fired.
By all accounts, Budenholzer's requested permission to search elsewhere. We just aren't stopping him.
The day Budenholzer was publicly demoted -- this was the likeliest outcome.
When Travis came aboard and immediately began undoing all of the previous regimes moves -- this was the likeliest outcome.
When Bud pleaded for weeks for Travis to bring back Millsap, to no avail -- this outcome was largely cemented.
Bud is fleeing from this franchise the same way Horford did. He isn't board with the direction of the new leadership.
It's not really anyone's fault.

Not true. This has been brewing with Travis from day one. You and I both recognized that much of what Travis said about Bud wasn't really glowing reviews. Travis knew Bud would be disgruntled and that other teams would come calling and he'd have an easy out. Instead he could have recognized that Bud is a great coach and worked from day one to ensure that he continued to be the Hawks coach. He did the opposite. Treated him with indifference. It's the classic 'get your girlfriend to break up with you' scenario.
Allowing Bud to interview with another team, and getting to the point that he wants to, is the same as firing him. Now it could be this was a deal between the two all along but I doubt it.

Hey, don't break your arm patting yourself on the back there, @macd ...
I can no longer disagree with the bolded. Don't tell @jamamallll, I'm silent protesting him right now.

But, wanting to bring in your own coach who's vision and style aligns directly with your own isn't ego.
Right now you're in stage three. I promise, this isn't as bad as you think.

Appreciate the counceling Jamaal, but you're not making me feel any better. I'm also not sold on you're theory that TS will bring in his guy and that it will result in a better coach. Introducing a new coach system is another rebuild

That's why I'm not speaking to @jamalll.

He seems to think this is a good thing and not a colossal step back even from behing the 8-ball we were already behind.

How many steps back before we start moving forward?
Let's look to he GSW model for clarity. It took 7 years and two Head Coaches to get to true contention.
You're right. This new guy might just be a placeholder to aid in development/maturation/preparation of the young guys.
Think -- the Mark Jackson hire, before they got to Steve Kerr. That's still a step toward our ultimate goal.
There's a lot of work to be done in this thing, fellas.
(I think the reactions by all were worsened from months of choosing to ignore the many signs that were emerging. This really is how most rebuilding scenarios play out.)
