What do you see as fair compensation for Coach Bud as Hawks fans? Hawks fans only please and this is only in relationship to the Suns and no other team.

And those are the only options?

Reasonable would be 31.

None of these options is fair or reasonable.

Agreed. The most we could hope to get is a pick swap from #19 up to #15.

We need this coaching issue to be resolved quickly so we can start interviewing for Bud's replacement.

I think the most likely scenario is Bud agrees to walk away from the $14 million still owed and PHX swaps #31 for our #33.

I'd say that is fair.

If he does leave, Milwaukee will be the more likely destination. They are playoff ready with the next superstar player of the league. Phoenix is further ahead of the process compared to us, but a rebuilding team nonetheless.

Milwaukee didn’t get permission to interview. Plus are the Hawks okay with him going another team in the same conference?

And I think Bud himself prefers Phoenix because he’s from Arizona. Even though he’s under contract, no other team will trade for him if he doesn’t actually want to coach for that team.

Michael Cunningham wrote:What compensation could Hawks expect for letting Budenholzer leave?

If Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer decides to take another job, it almost certainly will cost his new team in the form of draft-pick compensation.

Budenholzer still is under contract with the Hawks for two more seasons at about $14 million (his deal wasn’t altered when he gave up his personnel power in 2017). The Hawks have granted him permission to speak with the Suns about their open head coach position. If Budenholzer takes that job or any other, the Hawks would demand compensation to let Budenholzer out of his contract.

There is a recent precedent for an NBA coach leaving under similar circumstances: Doc Rivers departed the Celtics to become Clippers head coach before the 2013-14 season.

The Celtics then, like the Hawks now, were entering a rebuilding period and Rivers in 2013, like Budenholzer in 2018, decided to look elsewhere.

The Celtics got an unprotected first-round pick in the 2015 draft from the Clippers, which ended up being the No. 28 overall pick.

Depending on which year it rendered, an unprotected first-round pick from the Suns could be more valuable to the Hawks than the pick the Celtics got from the Clippers.

I vote #16 because that's my min opening offer. Might settle for #16 and #31 for our #30 and #33

We'd end up with: #4, #16, #19 and #31

I think TS has a lot of ways to get another top 20 pick to go with 4 and 19. That would be a solid first draft in the rebuild

The Phoenix Suns Should be Willing to Trade for Mike Budenholzer

Mike Budenholzer is in the running to become the next Phoenix Suns head coach. He should be Ryan McDonough’s first choice.

The news has many Suns fans buzzing at the prospect.

Budenholzer is still under contract for two more years and $14 million with the Hawks, and the fact the Hawks seem willing to part with a successful coach like Mike is a little puzzling. If Robert Sarver and Ryan McDonough like what they hear from Budenholzer when they interview him, they need to commit to bringing him here to be the next head coach of the Phoenix Suns.

For Phoenix to get him, it is very likely they would have to trade some kind of pick or asset. Nearly any pick should be on the table for Phoenix, with a few exceptions.

Obviously the Suns’ own pick in this draft is off the table, as no coach is worth a top-4 pick in a loaded draft class. The Suns would be wise to keep their own pick next year off the table as well.

Besides those two picks, however, the Suns should not hesitate in giving up their other assets to acquire Budenholzer.

:D

Question: If a player is traded away, does his contract go with him?
If Bud is traded away, shouldn't his contract go with him? His new team assumes the $$$$ owed?

Hawks bought out, released the two players who are now Sixers. They were not traded away. That's different.
Hawks are not willing to give Bud away. They wish to trade him for something if he is going to leave. What?
That is the big question, isn't it.

Perhaps, after he looks around, the grass may not be greener in that other pasture. Home in Atlanta may not
be so bad, after all. If he does leave, will the Hawks consider moving up their head coach from the G League?

So may questions. Your own answers requested.............

I think player contracts are collectively bargained. Basically, the union has allowed player contracts to be traded with the understanding that the player will still receive that compensation.

Coaches are exempt from this. For better or worse.

At this point, it'd be really difficult for Budenholzer to come back and lead this franchise with most players knowing he isn't/wasn't fully committed.

A protected future pick from PHX could get the job done. (Top-7 protected from 2021, unprotected in 2022?)

Other coach trades and compensation:

Stan Van Gundy: traded from MIA to Orl for a 2nd and the right to swap 1sts, even though he was no longer the coach but still under contract. Gundy resigned as coach but still stayed with the team in a diff. capacity. Orl still had to compensate the Heat.
Pat Riley: traded from NYK to MIA for a future 1st (turned into 19th pick overall in 96). There was a tampering charge filed by NYK in this cuffufle.

16th pick is mandatory and non negotiable but ideally, I would like that highest in a pick swap of the 1st and 4th before the lottery as well

I just had a flash back...
The last time we had dealings with the Suns and compensation it caused a fracture in the ASG ownership group.....ehy it always gotta be something with this team.
