Marlon Garnett reportedly set to join Melvin Hunt on Atlanta Hawks coaching staff

Spears also indicates that Phoenix Suns assistant coach and player development coordinator Marlon Garnett will join the staff as an assistant in Atlanta. Garnett previously played college basketball at Santa Clara with Pierce and, after a lengthy playing career, he joined the staff of the San Antonio Spurs before moving on to his most recent stop in Phoenix.

... Phoenix Suns assistant coach and player development coordinator ...

... ugh.

So we went to the organization that's famous for spectacularly failing to develop guys and figured that'd be a good add considering all we need to do the next few years is develop guys?

1. That's massively inappropriate.

2. it's also extremely hilarious.

My take is that Lloyd is just filling out the bench with close allies and guys he knows well. While I agree that a former HC at his side would be ideal...Lloyd's strong background with player development and Travis's heavy hand as GM -- give me some comfort.

That was my watered down reaction. :)

Considering I have a diminished level of faith in Schlenki .................

.............. I ain't happy with the staff so far. If these were his first choices ...... {insert Fozzy gif} ... I'd hate to see his plan B guys.

He has only been with Phoenix two years. Id say Devin Booker has done well. Before Phoenix, he was player development coordinator at San Antonio

Very good point on Booker. Phoenix really missed the boat with the Morris twins and that was way before he was there. The Suns problems are they hang on to their bad players and cut their good players loose. The twins are not all stars but they are tougher and better than any forwards they've had since.

Hawks add two assistant coaches

The Hawks added two more assistants, Marlon Garnett and Chris Jent, to new coach Lloyd Pierce’s staff.

Garnett joins the Hawks after serving two seasons as an assistant/player development coordinator with the Suns. He previously was a player-development assistant and video coordinator for one season with the Spurs, following a long career playing internationally. Garnett played alongside Pierce at Santa Clara University.

Jent was a Hawks assistant for one season under Pierce’s predecessor, Mike Budenholzer. Jent also has been an assistant with the Kings (2013-14), Cavaliers (2006-11), Magic (2004-05) Sixers (2003-04) and at Ohio State, his alma mater. Pierce and Jent were on Cleveland’s staff together for three years.

Long-time NBA assistant Melvin Hunt also joined the Hawks this week. He is Pierce’s lead assistant.

The Hawks are expected to add two more assistants to Pierce’s staff. So far Jent is the only assistant to be retained from Budenholzer’s staff.

Hawks add Greg Foster, Matt Hill to coaching staff

The Hawks have added assistants Greg Foster and Matt Hill to new coach Lloyd Pierce’s coaching staff.

Foster joins the Hawks after four seasons as a Bucks assistant. He was a player development coach with the 76ers in 2013-14. Foster played for 13 seasons in the NBA, including 33 games with the Hawks during the 1992-93 season.

Hill was an assistant coach with the Magic in 2017-18. He’d previously served with the Magic as a video analyst and scouting/player development aide.

Foster and Hill are expected to be the final assistants hired for Pierce’s staff. The others are Melvin Hunt (lead), Marlon Garnett and Chris Jent.

Jent is the only assistant retained from the staff of Pierce’s predecessor, Mike Budenholzer. Budenholzer has been hired as Bucks head coach and last week one of his Hawks assistants, Charles Lee, joined him in Milwaukee.

Greg Foster huh? At first I thought it was Jeff Foster. While I always hated Jeff, I'd fully support having him on staff and teach these guys what physical play really is. I'm guessing Jeff Foster hung out with guys at the club after the game exactly zero times.

Babcock previously was an assistant coach for Erie of the G League, before that team became a Hawks affiliate. Pierce said player development will be Babcock’s primary responsibility with the Hawks.

Pierce’s staff includes five assistant coaches. They are Melvin Hunt (lead), Marlon Garnett , Chris Jent, Greg Foster and Matt Hill. Jent is the only assistant retained from the staff of Pierce’s predecessor, Mike Budenholzer.

No veteran coaches? Mmmmmmmmm
