Trae Young and the perils of extreme confidence

The chip on the shoulder of the Atlanta Hawks star drives him to be great -- but how does he keep it from rubbing some people the wrong way?

Image

"ICE TRAE" MATERIALIZES when Young is really feeling it. Young's father was the one who told him never to back down from anybody, but sometimes his son's boldness emits an involuntary wince.

"I talk to him about it," Rayford Young says. "I want him to stay healthy. I don't want anyone to cheap-shot him. He tells me, 'Dad, I'm fine. This is part of my game.'"

Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce makes the salient point that if a star doesn't have a tinge of arrogance, he'll be swallowed whole in the league. This is especially true when one stands barely over 6 feet tall. Young discussed this with Kobe Bryant, and the Black Mamba told him there were two types of players: lions and sheep.

"Be a lion," Bryant advised Young.

Young acknowledges his tunnel vision, and the intensity that accompanies it. With each passing NBA season, he says, he's considering how to appease the needs and wants of his teammates.

"Not everyone thinks the way I do," Young says. "I'm learning how to adjust and adapt to different people. But there's one thing I hope my teammates all understand. There's two different people in me: the basketball version and the personal version.

"The basketball version is willing to do whatever it takes to win. Sometimes, that will come along with controversy. I want to bring out the best in everybody and I hope they will bring out the best in me. The teammates who understand that are the ones I'm closest with."

Nate McMillan on Trae Young
“I look at Trae and his development in my time being here this season. I don’t know what he went through last year but it’s very similar to Victor Oladipo and Sabonis — having guys who are really good players and all of a sudden they become an All-Star, things change with how teams play you, the coverages you see, teams tend to get physical with you, they do things like what Trae is seeing now, sometimes they box-and-1 you,” McMillan said. “That can be frustrating for a player. For a young guy to see that kind of defense, he has to go through that growth against playing defenses like that. He’s seen traps before but I don’t know if he’s seen someone trying to deny him 30, 40 minutes, which is what Indiana did, Toronto did and having to make that adjustment can be frustrating for players. How do you play without the ball? What can you do without the ball and help your team? These are some of the things Coach Pierce is having to teach and show on video. This is the growth you have to show when teams are trying to take you out in order to help your team.”

You guys think Trae is suited for the role of NBA bad boy?

I've noticed this ever since Nate took over as coach, but Trae reminds me more of Iverson and Isiah now than of Nash and Curry.

Majority of people said Trae is the next Curry or Nash when he as drafted, but Trae really likes getting in the paint like Iverson and making his plays there.

I’d start a franchise with Trae over anyone. I said that on the general board but they bood me. Trae is the best point guard since Magic imo.

And with 18ast in a playoffs game, he's one the youngest player in history to do such a thing!

Trae got snubbed from the All Nba 3rd team. Why did Kyrie on a stacked team make it over Trae?

Former Hawks legend and Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins even went so far as to say that Trae Young hasn’t come close to reaching his full potential. “He hasn’t even reached his ceiling yet,” Wilkins said on the “All Things Covered” podcast. “This kid is remarkable. I see him everyday, so I see a lot of things people don’t see so it just amazes me how hard this guy has played. What he’s done — first of all he got overlooked on the All-Star team, and I know about getting snubbed. He’s been snubbed a couple times but you know what I love about him, he doesn’t let that slow him down or affect him. He keeps proving them wrong and that’s all you can do when people don’t give you your due.”
