Yahoo SportsNBA will not take away Cavaliers' draft pick after investigating their signing of Patrick McCaw
one of the strangest dramas of the young NBA season is over. Patrick McCaw is playing for the Toronto Raptors, and the Cleveland Cavaliers will face no penalty for assisting him in getting there.
On Monday, the NBA announced that it had completed the investigation into the matter and found that the Cavaliers were not in violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. In the end, the Cavaliers will not face a penalty, which could have been dire if their tanking season — which currently sees them with the worst record in the league — ended without a shot at Zion Williamson and a top draft pick.
It’s a strange situation that could have cost Cleveland up to $6 million and its first-round pick — which will likely land in the top five — for what would have amounted to spite for the Golden State Warriors.

Re: Mavs & Cavs Draft Pick Watch
Incredibly fruitful MLK day for the Hawks.
- Loss to Orl separates them from 3.5 to 5.5 games for the 5th pick.
- Another Mavs loss which makes them tied for the 8th pick.
- Orl and Dal are only separated by a 1/2 game in overall record for the 7th pick.
Mavs schedule is kinda weird. They could go 5-2 in their next 7 games and may go 0-7 or 1-6 in the following 7 games.

The bottom 5 is completely beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the NBA. Unless we have so brutally terrible lottery luck with Dallas jumping into the top 3, that pick looks like it'll be a spectacular get this offseason. Imagine having two picks in the top 7.

7th has 32% for top4 pick. It’s not that unlikely that to happen to be qualified as brutally terrible lottery luck for the Hawks. Odds for 7th to finish 7th after lottery are only 20%. So in reality Hawks will need big luck to have 2 top 7 picks and not other way around.

At this point, after multiple warnings and causing multiple threads to be closed -- I am in support of more drastic options.
I'd like to see mods from Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks boards all confer to consider a more...permanent solution.
It's gone on far too long.

Imagine you surpass Dallas and they finish as the 5th worst team. With this pace of both teams, it looks possible though.

Re: Mavs & Cavs Draft Pick Watch
The AthleticAn updated look at NBA Draft pick protection obligations
Dallas — Retain if 1-5 (otherwise it goes to Atlanta):
While the Mavericks are having a much more competitive season fueled by 2018 first rounder Luka Doncic, they are another team who could shift their approach should the playoffs get out of reach. Since this pick is top-5 protected, it will be harder for Dallas to work their way down, as there are five teams established at the bottom of the barrel.
Interestingly, the new lottery odds shift incentives, as now the worst franchises have a lower chance of winning the lottery while teams who did better have better odds than before. For example, if the Mavericks can get to the seventh-worst record, they would have a 31.9 percent chance of retaining their choice, which is meaningfully higher than 20.2 percent at the ninth-worst record. This pick was what Dallas gave to Atlanta to move up from No. 5 to No. 3 so they could draft Doncic and it has top-5 protection for 2020 then top-3 for both 2021 and 2022 before finally becoming unprotected in 2023.

Re: Mavs & Cavs Draft Pick Watch
24/7 SportsBarring a change, Mavs are heading for the worst-case scenario
Following the June 21 draft-time trade with the Atlanta Hawks that landed Luka Doncic in Dallas, there was one goal in mind: Playoff Basketball. The Mavericks, in coach Rick Carlisle's own opinion, moved from "rebuilding'' to "building.'' From that point forward, in their own minds, it was "playoffs or bust.'' However, Dallas is now in danger of what many would consider the worst-case scenario of both missing out on the playoffs and the 2019 lottery pick.
More specifically, the Mavericks continued stubborn insistence to feature Wes Matthews and Harrison Barnes in both the starting lineup and as major keys to the offensive system has left them in a precarious state of now likely being too far back to make a serious push for playoff contention, and too far ahead in lottery standing to have a realistic shot keeping their draft pick. That decision making ultimately falls on not just one, but the entire Mavs 'Triangle of Trust" ... because this "Treadmill of Mediocrity'' is something Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson know all about, too.
As it stands now, the Mavericks (22-27) now have just days to make the decisions to change and try to make a push at postseason basketball -- or ride out the rest of the season in hopes that their next 33 games will somehow produce different results.

I predicted 8-12. Ugh ...can we please not do any more of these huge trades where I have to add the Mavs to my YouTube tv then root against them then for them...it’s hard.
