Cap Space

Post#1 » by saloonyk8 » Sat Feb 23, 2019 3:47 am

What's the deal with cap space, assuming we draft our own 1st rd picks this year and don't sign any major FA, will we have space in 2020 for Max (or two Max)?

Can we sign Middleton this year and still have space in 2020?

I know AD is FA then, anyone else noteworthy? I didn't see any good names for UFA

Draymond and Ben Simmons (restricted) Jamal Murray (restricted) were only other players I noticed in 2020. Seems like a brutal FA class after Anthony Davis. Hopefully he gets traded to a team he hates and Lakers can't keep the cap space another year.

For me, this offseason, Draymond and Iggy or Horford and Iggy.

I want only quality ass vets who know how to make others around them better, especially on defense but even on offense. Playmaking, leadership, impact, knowing how to play is critical at this stage since we are adding rookies to the mix.

Baze ($19 mil), Plumlee ($12.5), Len ($4) will be off the books in 2020 - that's $35 million.
Projected 2020 salary cap space un 2020 is $118 million.

The salaries of Trae, Huerter, Bembry, Prince, Collins, Spellman and 2 lottery 1st will be around $50 million in 2020 (i included a rough calc for capholds on Prince $14 and Bembry $11).

Projected 2020 salary cap space is $118 million. Hawks can have $68 mil +/- in 2020.
A 30% max is $35 mil, the 35% max is $41 mil. - so only one True max, if we excluded capholds in Prince and Bembry we can get to 2.

A Middleton max is $32 million per (that's a Joe Johnson move to me) we can get close to 1 max in 2020. But that's also contingent on if we extend Collins early or not, he'll be eligible in 2020.

No point in blowing the cap now. Hawks can do what the GSW did, let Curry, Klay, and Green develop, then when the time is right, swoop in and get Durant.

So in 2020 we could sign AD OR Draymond but not both. I don't see any other compelling FA out there that year.

I'm not saying we should sign Middleton but he might be best FA fit this off-season.

Yeah that's what I'm looking at, 2020 will be possible last year for Max cap space if Collins gets extended. They why I was looking at that class of FA

It's good idea, but with the exception that it was a "one time in history" move.
Some injuries led GSW to be able to sign Curry for less than he should have got without injuries, they were all "underpaid" (or rightly paid with most of the league being overpaid) and they were able to add Durant because the Salary cap made a jump from 70M to 94M

There won't be a jump like that, so the only solution is to not letting develop the young guys too much (and risk high new contracts) before adding one or two stars.

2021 FA would be our last year technically speaking unless we pay TP big time. But we are due to have a lot of cap in 2020 than 2021. The issue is, 2020, everyone in the NBA has cap space. 2019 is our best year to make moves for key vets.

I think most of the 2020 cap space teams will blow it this year. Just think between the clippers, Lakers, nets, Knicks, who will swing out on free agents this off-season then take a real measured approach and not sign any bug names. Will be hard to imagine that happening with Lakers and Knicks especially, the primary locations for AD

Yeah, exactly. The Durant-type move probably isn't in the cards again for anyone with an established core. That said, rewind a couple years before that, and grabbing a 2nd tier guy like the Iggy signing is probably something we could pull off. Draymond would be a super interesting pick, and a guy the young dudes would absolutely revere. This year feels a little early for one of those moves, but it's a pretty deep class...

Paolo on the Ringer NBA show floated the idea of Jimmy Butler? :o

I saw that thread, all it will take is another year to groom younger players. Just means we can't take on any big money prior to that
