With Collins at the four, it will be intriguing to see if the Hawks switch things 1-4 or keep Collins inside as a helper by instructing all their players to stay disciplined and fight through screens. The Hawks may be more aggressive and experimental if Capela is supported from the wing positions by Reddish and Hunter. Either way, the options to play more than one way are clearly there now, and Collins’ is arguably a lot better suited as a rotator as opposed to a core big man defensive role. Below is a compilation of some of his timing blocks.

Coach needs to demonstrate his defensive rep. He's said in the past that he hadn't instituted his scheme because the team wasn't ready. Time to start playing in the big league

Watching the Heat pummel their way through the EC Playoffs, I see them using a 2-3 Zone defense that allows them to hide T Herro, Duncan Robinson on the wings while unleashing Crowder, Butler and Bam Adebayo in the middle of the court.
This seems like an approach we should occasionally utilize 2 hide Huerter, Trae.

Pierce has deployed his own Zone, just not consistently.
Lloyd Pierce never has been a staunch zone defense supporter..........The zone defense is out of Pierce’s comfort zone. This past summer, while Pierce worked for Team USA in the FIBA World Championships, one of the main concepts he picked up through all of the coaching staff meetings he attended with Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr and Villanova head coach Jay Wright was the zone from Wright.
When the Hawks are in a zone, they’ve generally settled on a 1-2-2 scheme. The 1-2-2 defense allows a team to pressure the ball on the perimeter and allows for some trapping. Pierce feels like the 1-2-2 alignment is most effective in the NBA because most teams play on the perimeter now. A 2-3 zone would work if an opponent were inclined to post up and run high-low action or play offense in the middle of the floor, but that’s not happening much in today’s NBA.
The Hawks’ game Friday against Brooklyn offered a good example of the 1-2-2 and how it can force a bad shot when everyone sticks to his assignment.

Hopefully with the year to adjust, we'll see major strides. @King Ken kept saying this.

• Hunter acknowledged that defense was hard for him entering the season because of having to learn a new concept than he was used to in college. Virginia’s schemes are very different than what we see in the NBA, so now that he has a season under his belt, perhaps he’ll be much better than he was this season because he certainly wasn’t as good as advertised coming out of school. “Throughout the season, I definitely got better,” Hunter said.

Re: How do the Hawks get better defensively?
In something I read recently, someone asserted that Snell and Hill are solid defensive wings. And, I think I recall Schlenk suggesting as much in his Zoom presser.
Got me curious, so I looked at both players' Defensive Ratings for the last three seasons in comparison to their overall team's Defensive Rating--to see if they appeared to help or hurt their team rating since the stat for any one player skewed to some degree by everyone he shares a roster with.
Snell
2019-20 DET (112 overall team rating): 117 *tied with others as worst on the team
2018-19 MIL (105 overall team rating): 109 *worst on team was 110
2017-18 MIL (110 overall team rating): 114 *worst on team was 115
Hill
2019-20 MIA (109 overall team rating): 107 in 11 games
2019-20 MEM (110 overall team rating): 112 in 48 games
2018-19 NOP (112 overall team rating): 115
2017-18 NOP (108 overall team rating): 109
Don't have time at the moment to do any further deep diving in 82games, but this don't look good.

Re: How do the Hawks get better defensively?
Unfortunately, a review of their 82games numbers that are reflective of defense... e.g., their on-court/off-court, their EFG% vs opp EFG%... are pretty much consistent with what is hinted at in those numbers above... so, Hill's pretty much average-to-below-average defensively, and Snell is bordering on terrible.
I just looked at the most recent 3 years. Perhaps they've earned better reputations with better numbers earlier in their careers, but can't really legitimately make a case that Snell or Hill are assets at this stage.

Still the same problem tho. Transition defense was horrible. Pick and roll/switch defense was bad. The team can run and shoot all they want but this defense tonight was not that good

"Rome wasn't built in a day." Building a good defense takes time. They now have, at last, game film to work with.
Actually, the worse our defense looked, the better. The team and coaches can see where they need to improve.
Tis said, the focus at practice has been defense. Lots and lots of work to do. I suppose that the short time before
the first game wasn't nearly enough time. All the new players. Still, a short time until opening season game.
Orlando played in the bubble and they have most of the players returning from there. Meanwhile, Hawks have so
many new parts to try and fit together. We will not see our new picture for a while. Defense, can and will improve.

They would be better off looking to drive first and then kick out for shooting. That would lead to higher percentage shots, less long rebounds and run outs.

Not good compared to last year is completely different. They looked night and day better than last year even if the defense wasn't good yesterday.

I have a saying, if there are a group of girls and all of them are ugly but your friend dates the pretty ugly one, it still makes her ugly

Terrible analogy
