Go get Justin Patton now... or as soon as he is off the waiver wire

Post#1 » by _s_t_u_r_t_ » Thu Apr 4, 2019 5:47 pm

Just happened to be waived by the Sixers yesterday. If I understand the rules correctly, anyone who would actually want to sign him long-term will NOT want to get him off of waivers because that would effectively cap what they can offer to him as a free agent if they actually wanted to keep him.

So, I suspect he's going to be a free agent.

Deytona Davis' contract expires Sunday night, so that would create the necessary roster slot. Get 'er done, Colonel!

Here's some more recent video of Patton in G-League. To those unfamiliar... and I suppose that might be a lot of people actually... he was a 16th pick out of Creighton for MIN who developed some foot problems soon after being drafted, and ended up being trade fodder in the Butler deal.

Worth a tryout, I guess. Doesn't really impress me any more than Davis has(n't).

I'm still pining for that one dude who's now on NOP.

I've been pushing this for some time. I think he'd be a perfect fit with what the Hawks are trying to do. Especially his defensive impact.

Yeah Wood was the gem, we missed. Patton, not sure, seems weak and slow on the video

I agree he looks a step slower, but I'm inclined to attribute that to just him getting back into shape. He's been down for a long time, and anytime you've had a significant injury that keeps you off your feet, it's going to affect speed and endurance for a bit.

Here's something to show his performance when he first got out of Creighton.

That's some very slick passing for a big man, folks.

You have to get a medical opinion on his feet... plural, because as I recall, he's actually been hobbled by one, got better, then went down with a problem with the other.

I mean Humphires doesn't even belong on the roster, so Patton at the least, can just occupy a roster spot until something more intriguing comes along.

Patton, I would think, will be back up to speed by the time training camp would roll around. Watch the earlier videos... he's not just-a-guy. He's a real deal.

He lacks physicality, and "feet" injuries are troublesome for bigs. He's more suitable as a 15-20 minute shot blocker off the bench. Would certainly use that against teams with perimeter players that drive a lot. Maybe more if he shows some ability to really bang inside and his foot injuries aren't as bad as they could be. If not, he has no real ability to space the floor, still raw, and won't have the easy height advantage he is use to having.

As far as I've ever been aware it's true to say foot injuries for athletes are problematic. Until they're not anymore.

It just takes awhile, but if the guy ever gets it corrected and gets back, it doesn't tend to be recurring. In Patton's case, he didn't reinjure the same foot, but rather, he suffered an injury to the other.

That's my basis for believing he's a good risk from here on, and the long time off will require some patience as he knocks the rust... and some pudginess that wasn't there before... and as he is only 21 soon to be 22, that's going to happen.

Not sure where the "no real ability to space the floor" comes from, as he's shown himself very much capable to hit from the arc when asked or given the chance, but I'll agree there's a lot of catching up to do now... he's effectively developmentally delayed at this point, and needs to recapture the momentum he had prior to going down with the first foot injury.

It's neither a yay or nay from me. It's tryout season.

It's Monday. Open roster slot now, as we speak. Make it happen, Colonel.
