Vince Carter encore in ATL?

He's an asset, there's no argument.
I'm looking at Huerter, Bazemore, Bembry as SGs... that's three, and we might have a fourth from the draft. (I think we're cutting Anderson, or he'd be a fifth.)
I don't like Carter playing SF, but of course, it doesn't matter what I like... and we really only have Prince there, plus maybe a free agent and/or a draftee.
So, when Travis calls me for his monthly counseling session, I'm going to have to tell him I'm probably not recommending a Vince encore... but we'll see.

First off....I love VC. I love him in the locker room and I love him (surprisingly) on the court in
limited minutes. With that said, this could go one of two ways, IMO.
1. IF you believe the Hawks are ready to ascend from the rebuild ashes and be a player in the east playoff race, then I don't think they will have a roster spot available for a 40+ year old mentor. The Hawks are so young they will need every roster spot, imo, reserved for significant vet contributors (on court). Having VC is a luxury that that a young team actively trying to make its first playoff push likely cannot afford.
2. IF you believe the Hawks are not quite ready to make their playoff push, then VC becomes more valuable as a role model / end of bench vet inside the locker room and on the court. In that scenario, his mentoring ability for a young team becomes invaluable, imo. Also, under this construct, roster spots are not at a premium so the idea of "saving" one til the end of the summer when the dust from FA settles is not so far fetched.

He is worth as much as Bazemore is getting paid

I'd welcome Vince back with open arms, he's an invaluable locker room asset for a young team and the knowledge he's able to continue passing down Trae, Kevin and our new rookies will be very beneficial in the long run.

Using Bazemore as a baseline based on when and the circumstances of the capspike 3 years ago is not a good barometer to use.

Echoed above invaluable leadership as well as on court production from a future HOFer, I’ll gladly take Vince back. He looks good in ATL gear!

Other than "veteran role model" type support, the other thing Vince offers is good versatility. Can play minutes at 2-4 (the 4 only in a pinch). You can do worse with your final roster spot.

If we're talking position-less basketball, yes, then, you can do worse with your final roster spot.
VC is a wing, and his real position is the 2. We're going to have a LOT of wings, most of them 2s.

I'm assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that his contract could be traded at the deadline and then bought out from a team looking to shed salary for next year's FA. He and Baze both are candidates for that (although Baze could be kept by a trading team). So I'm not sure there's any real advantage to just cutting Plumlee straight out during the off season just to make room for VC.

We can do that if we continue to take on bad contracts, otherwise Plumlee is a waste of a roster spot. I think Vince is worth keeping around personally

I've got no interest in taking on bad contracts. I'm more talking about cap-strapped teams that might be willing to trade an asset in the form of a contributing player in exchange for cap flexibility next summer. Hawks should find themselves in the middle of a playoff chase around the trade deadline next season so maybe they use plumlee's contract to sweeten a deal. It's not like it would be an albatros for the receiving team given it would expire 2 months later.
And, btw, I'm not against signing VC. I'd love for him to be back if there's room. I'm just not sure there's going to be room and don't see TS buying out plumlee to make room. Could be wrong though. Should be a fascinating summer.

You're just saying we hold onto Plumlee as salary filler? Genuinely asking, not being a smartass. I'm not sure he has the value to get a good player on a reasonable contract.
The issue here is roster spots, and personally, I'd rather have Vince than Plumlee if it came down to it, future trade options be damned

Vince should not get playing time on next year's team...We should sign real contributors like a Julius Randall etc. Our free agent signings and draft choices should play the vast majority of the bench minutes.
