Prospect Spotlight -- Tyrese Haliburton

Moderators: dms269, Jamaaliver, HMFFL

Is Ty Haliburton worth a lottery selection for our Hawks?

No way we're spending a top-10 pick on another PG

If he's available like rumors suggest we should pursue him still. Any idea what the asking price is?

Him and OO would work ridiculously well together. But I believe you are right he’s out of our price range, but he would have looked good in a Hawks uni, hopefully we acquire him somehow at some point in his career.

Just before the draft, I was split between Okonwu or Haliburton. I was hoping we could get another Top10 pick to choose both guys.

The Pacers have traded Domantas Sabonis, Jeremy Lamb, Justin Holiday and a 2027 second round pick to the Kings for Tyrese Hailburton, Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson on Tuesday, per Adrian Wojnarowski.

What a massive trade, but Sabonis basically takes away from the fantasy value of every big in Sacramento. Sabonis himself should still be a fantasy stud, but if everyone else stays put, Marvin Bagley won't be getting much of an opportunity, while Richaun Holmes and Chimezie Metu will likely lose out on some rebounds. It's a pretty lateral move for two non-playoff teams, and it damages the fantasy value of a lot of guys. Sabonis should be a good fit with De'Aaron Fox, which helps Fox in the assist category.

Don't know what to think about that. Yes, SAC get a borderline All Star/All-Star, but loosing Haliburton, a guy that can pass and defend, on a full rookie contract! I'm surprised it was not Fox instead, even if the salary difference would have lead to a different trade. But maybe IND didn't want Fox at all

Fox did not have the trade value to get Sabonis.

Exactly! He has a good head on his shoulders, was committed to Sacramento, and now Indiana has a future allstar.

It seems almost all the teams didn't know SAC were ready to trade him. They were certainly talking to IND for Sabonis, IND asked for Haliburton, and it was a done deal.

Tyrese Haliburton Says He Told Cavs, Hawks Not to Pick Him in 2020 NBA Draft

Image

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton wanted to steer clear of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks when he was entering the NBA in 2020.

ESPN's Jonathan Givony reported on The Lowe Post podcast in November 2020 (via NBC Sports California's James Ham) that Haliburton's agents were working behind the scenes to ensure certain teams wouldn't select him in the draft.

Haliburton confirmed Thursday on The Old Man & The Three he at least told representatives from the Cavs and Hawks he didn't want to land with their franchises.

The second-year guard alluded to Atlanta and Cleveland's existing backcourts as why he was wary of both teams.

The Hawks had clearly identified Trae Young as their franchise cornerstone and got Kevin Huerter from that same 2018 draft. The Cavs, meanwhile, had used first-round picks on point guards (Collin Sexton and Darius Garland) in each of the previous two seasons.

While the Kings were already hitching their wagons to De'Aaron Fox—he signed a max extension in November 2020—Sacramento still had enough room to let Haliburton take on a big role.
