Article: Trae Young is the perfect Knicks target

With their trove of draft picks, the Knicks are prepared for another team’s star player becoming disgruntled. It’s not exactly a proactive strategy to wait for irreconcilable friction, but history suggests they’ll get a chance to capitalize.

In recent years, the biggest trades have exclusively involved players who asked out of an organization: Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, Kristaps Porzingis and Jimmy Butler, among others. Players have the power in today’s NBA and money is so abundant they’re leaving millions on the table to choose their destination. To that end, Karl Anthony-Towns and Donovan Mitchell have been pondered by the media as potential Knicks targets.

We probably shouldn't get to complacent and assume it won't ever happen to us.

The thought of it does make me wonder if we should simply be drafting BPA while we're still garnering top 10 picks in the draft. Just keep bringing in talent and let the cards ultimately land where they may.

TBH, I'm more concerned about J Collins asking out should he become unsatisfied during contract extension talks.

But if the Knicks’ star-less existence extends into 2021, there is another star to monitor: Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young.

Young is a bright-lights player in a city that doesn’t care much about the Hawks. Word is Young not only craves a bigger stage, but became frustrated with Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce.

It’s not difficult to imagine Young’s logo shots and electrifying dribbling displays setting MSG aflame. Young is under contract next season and becomes eligible for a max extension in the summer of 2021. If he doesn’t sign, Young will become a restricted free agent in 2022.

It’s rare for a star to maneuver away from a franchise during his rookie contract. But it can happen. Just ask Porzingis and the Knicks.

such a stupid article. Author makes several claims that are either outright lies or just baseless speculation. For one, we never heard any rumors that Trae was frustrated with Pierce. That sounds like a complete lie by the writer. We all know Trae was unhappy with how the team was performing and the lack of talent on the roster, but we never heard a single word about Trae being frustrated with Pierce.

We also have no reason to be believe that Pierce, a first time assistant coach with Team USA, had anything to do with choosing the players who were picked.

Saying the pieces didn't fit together is completely disingenuous and ignores the Collins suspension, the Huerter injuries and the substantial improvement to Cam's game late in the season.

I agree with @jamallo in saying the team should be proactive in making sure Trae is gruntled (as opposed to disgruntled? :) )

But I also agree with shakes that this is a silly article that's light on fax and heavy on wild speculation.

IIUC, there were rumblings about Trae and Pierce not being on the same page. However, I think most of that was extrapolated from the garbage Turner and Crabbe were leaking to the media. At most, it was probably garden variety disagreements that every player has with their coach so I never read much into it.

Just my opinion .... see the author could learn something from me. I'm writing my opinion but I'm not presenting it as anything more than that. 8-)

We should still be drafting BPA. We are still talent deprived.
We have Trae as the one lone Superstar that can get voted to the Allstar game. We hope one of our wings can be a superstar. JC can be an Allstar.
